I usually just check my odometer using the markers on the Interstate when I drive far enough to do at least 50 Miles.

I had a similar experience a couple of years ago with "Big Red". My speedometer began reading low - intermittently, at first; then constantly. Then I noticed my fuel economy was really bad - 14's and 15's when I was used to 17's and 18's. And the odometer was reading less than actual mileage according to mile markers. Turned out the speedometer drive gear on the transfer case output shaft was worn to the point that it was skipping one tooth out of seven on each revolution. I replaced the gear, and everything was back to normal.

You could also use a speedometer gps program on a smart phone!

I'm with you Mustang Dave! I also have a dumb phone, and am A-OK with that!

My speed sensor quit working all together. I took it apart this weekend to replace the gear, and magically it started working again. So weird.

I have not had the opportunity to run my truck for a whole tank to see what I am getting now, since it is nice enough to ride my motorcycle. I appreciate all the feed back. I was curious to see what people were going to say about my "instant improvements" to MPGs.

No reason to stick with dumb phones these days. I bought a brand new smart phone for my parents for $10 at Target, and the voice/text/data plan is like $15/month.

As much as I hate being available to people, I use a smart phone to locate the best fuel prices (Gas Buddy), navigate (Google Maps), listen to music (Pandora), track workouts (Map My Ride), take notes (Evernote), set alarms and reminders, take pictures and videos, keep time, illumination, calculate, track finances... it is more Swiss Army than the knife.

A little update. I did a 10 mile distance check, and 10 miles reads 10.18 ish miles, so it looks like I went almost 2% the other direction. Better 2% than 11%, right? Also, I think I have a sweet spot around 67 mph. I did 29.5 avg for my 55 mile trip to work, and 29.0 avg for the return. Had quite a head wind on the way home, and was kicking in the a/c, which makes a huge difference if I run it constantly. I was running it only going downhill, so I think I didn't loose as much.
