Normally aspirated doesn't have the particulates problem as bad. Fuel injection droplet size does but solves other problems. A very high energy density fuel that is a gas and readily available is the holy grail. Dont wait for that

IIRC, white diesel (diesel mixed with a certain percent of water) is shown to reduce both particulates and HC emissions at the expense of higher CO emissions. Water injection seems to help diesels get better fuel mileage too.

Never heard of such white Diesel, yet adding alcohol to regular Diesel fuel in order to turn moisture contaminations into something combustible used to be quite common here.

Having driven a Brazilian Nissan XTerra with the MWM turbodiesel engine, it really seemed to go better in a rainy day.
