freebeard- Then there was the scene in MASH where Houlihan was upset about an operation and said "That man is a prisoner of war, Doctor." Trapper John didn't look up, he just said "So are you, sweetheart, but you don't know it."
One afternoon there was a crowd of about 20 or so that were all agitated up at the front of our compound. We were just watching the show without any concern. At one point one of them said with a great deal of pain "You don't understand... You have freedom!" We dissolved in laughter- he probably going to get home before we did. They got confused, quieted down and drifted away.
I guess the Pentagon is going to want us to send back our Global War on Terrorism medals and replace them with "I Helped Found ISIS and All I Got Was This Lousy Tee Shirt."
I read the link. Did Gordon Duff find the outline to an unpublished Ludlum novel?

Let's put it this way: I had to look up Robert_Ludlum. He sounds like another Dan Brown.
I've been reading Gordon Duff for years. His bio:
Quote:
Gordon Duff is a Marine combat veteran of the Vietnam War. He is a disabled veteran and has worked on veterans and POW issues for decades.
...is an accredited diplomat and is generally accepted as one of the top global intelligence specialists. He manages the world's largest private intelligence organization and regularly consults with governments challenged by security issues.
...has traveled extensively, is published around the world and is a regular guest on TV and radio in more than "several" countries.
...is a trained chef, wine enthusiast, avid motorcyclist and gunsmith specializing in historical weapons and restoration.
Business experience and interests are in energy and defense technology.

When you start tracing back, looking for the root cause of everything, every intersection of American Foreign Policy with Middle Eastern politics results in a cascade of unintended consequences. Backing the Afghans against the Russians. Backing Saddam against Iran. The Afghanistan/Iraqi conflicts. You just can't win.

That's a given: it's one of the two classic blunders. Most us us knew that going in, but this is a little more of a direct personal involvement in the actual blunder than I had realized. I wasn't just pumping fuel or guarding a FOB in the same war these guys got started in. I worked directly with some of them.

If we are to learn anything from the movies, now you must go meditate in the mountains and send a psychic message to your younger self to either kill these would be Osama Bin Ladens or give them free porn, in order to instill a love for all things 'Murican in them.

Thanks. He's no one-hit wonder. Apropos of the thread:

But I don't remember learnin' how to hate in Sunday school
Somewhere along the way I strayed and I never looked back again

And the drums are drummin' again

That's funny... Sadly true, but yet ironically funny.

Old Tele man -- when you post and delete, the email notifications have already gone out. It's an interesting approach to limiting the audience.
