I think there is virtually no chance it will meet government safety standards.

It is registed and road legal though. Probably beacause it isn't a production vehicle, it does not have to meet the normal standards.

Yes, it passes the 5 mph bumper test.
Does it pass the 60 mph offset head on crash barrier test, HELL NO!!!!!!!!!!

You cannot expect a team of students on a low budget to come up with a car that meets all the safety standards everywhere while the car weighs in at less than half of a small four seater car, and be electric and solar powered and all.
It is road legal because it complies to the rules for self-built and small series cars.
It was the only car in the solar challenge that was officially road legal, and despite that it won its class.
These guys completely redesigned stuff you wouldn't think about, like they made a novel and self-learning dash design. That it took delving into the menus just to raise the temp on the heater, who cares. It had a heater!
They built a car to compete in a solar race in the the Australian desert. But it had many of the comforts a modern car should have.
I bet they did not use the heater a lot

Ive met a lot of smart kids, many way smarter than I was growing up. Granted they get the help of smart parents, but many have the idea and need help carrying it out.
Im sure with kevlar, carbon fiber and such materials they could actually beat the crash tests for the national insurance institutes. (SP?)

It actually has a fair bit of space in front of the driver, and given the right engineering, it has just as much chance of meeting crash test standards as any car.
It is an achievement to get this kind of efficiency. Why does it have to meet every possible standard in the first prototype?
