Wooden it be nice?
www.inventwood.com/mettlewood/
An engineered product that is stronger than steel (anisotropically) and a fraction of the weight.
Woody wagons shall rise again.
Needs discussion of the embodied energy from the fabrication process.

I despise wood and it annoys me that we're still building everything with it.
Spent hours at HomeDepot last night sorting through every piece of cedar to find straight(ish) sticks with minimal blemishes.
So far I've managed to create a fall/death hazard today.
It was already a hidden death trap though. The railing lasted 20 years before internally rotting in such a way that a veneer of paint hid the decay.

You are working with raw wood, not an engineered product.
Densified wood gives junk wood a walnut-like grain. See the I-beam in the thumbnail?
This last week at BRING, they had 4x8 sheets of 1/4" plywood with an AA front face. I haven't seen plywood like that since the 1970s, perfect to sandblast and raise the grain. Four each at $20 (before the veterans discount) -- I just wanted to take them home and hoard them.

Getting it really wet raises the grain also, doesn't need sandblaster and compresor. Some plywood comes from the outer blemish free part of trees and as such doesn't really have grain that heart wood does.

I only saw a finished room paneled with it, but doubt you could get there just wetting it. There was a relief of maybe 1/16th" or half the face veneer.
A wire brush is another possibility.

"Wouldn't it be nice if we were older"...
Playing oldies during dinner with the girls, and that song came up.
I'm looking forward to the future, but would prefer to not be older then.

Why cut down forests when we could grow fields of hemp? I'd be surprised if this would be a better and cheaper product than what could be done with hemp.

Here's a tip. When you drive a nail or screw make sure the point is higher than the head if the wood will be exposed to water. That's often not possible to do but many times it is. That way the water will shed from the wood instead of seeping down the nail thus rotting the wood quicker. I've repaired many homes where it was obvious that water was seeping down the nail or screw and rotting the wood quicker. Most carpenters don't know this trick and it's much easier to drive a nail downward versus slightly upward.

(PDF) Densified Pellet Fuel Using Woody Core of Industrial Hemp ...
We prepared densified wood pellet by agricultural waste. The hemp woody core was used as replacing wood resource. Hemp was separated into the bast fiber and the woody core by hot steaming treatment.
|
The Mettlewood process basically softens the lignin and drives all the air (which has replaced moisture)to compact the wood fibers.
It might be best to separate the bast and lignin, weave a fabric, reimpregnate it and vacuum-bag the final product.
