No fan was ever designed to create air flow in the opposite direction of the natural air flow when the car is moving. I think you actually fixed it when you get them to pull air into the engine...

Push fan in front of radiator pull fan behind radiator. The fans running backwards could actually be the problem, reverse the connections, if there are only two wires.
