Hoerner worked for Messerschmitt during WW-II.He was brought to the U.S. under Operation...

The square tubing could disrupt the air as if you had squared-off leading edges.Flow would separate,you'd have permanent attached vortices requiring continuous energy input,and you'd rob the aft-body...

It looks like from the tiny image you first posted, that you can angle grind cut or torch off the upper part of the frame, flip and rotate and reattach to form a large chin spoiler or air dam.
