0w20 in my echo?
 
my :turtle:echo needs 5w30 oil. is that a good idea to use 0w20 syntetic . i know its good for the FE but will my engine wear faster or is it a problem for the leaks

I would stick with the recommended 5w30 as per the manual. Thinner oils tend to be better for FE, but there is a trade-off in terms of engine wear. Less than 1 % in FE savings is not enough to make me switch, especially considering it is a vital element to engine life.

My Echo has only seen 5w30 mineral oil since day one. I might switch to synthetic in the long run though.

this is what i was thinking too but do you think that the mobil 1 0w30 advenced fuel economy will make a diference in wear or leaks? and how many miles a syntec oil can last?

You need to do some more reading on which manufacturers use 0w20 oil and what changes they have made to the engine/design. I have run 5w20 in my yaris for 8000km then went back to 5w30 synthetic and change oil and filter once a year [22,000km/yr] I am at 119,000km on the odometer without problems. I dought that a change to 0w20 oil will amount to much in fuel savings. I would recomend you learn some hypermiling techniques, and you will get way better results than a change in oil.

I would stay away from those 0w oils unless the manufacture calls for them in that type of engine.
Problem I see is you dont want to use super thin oil in a compact and some what high power 4 cylinder engine that my have high bearing loads on its crank rod bearings.

If you build your own gasoline engine and everything just so happened to have tight .002" crank, rod and cam bearing clearances, also had fairly large bearing surfaces compared to power out put then 0w might be the way to go.

Last engine I built everything was closer to .004'' and 5w-40 seems like it may be too thin.

I'd say give it a shot for 3-5k miles. When you go to change your oil next, do an oil analysis and see what kind of wear is going on.

It really depends on your oil pressure. If you want to know for certain, get a gage. The generally acceptable minimum is 10 psi per 1000 rpm, with idle around 20.

never use a NON synthetic oil
never use synthetic oil or alleged synthetic oil that does not have
an ACEA specification , the API and ILSAC specifications are poor substitutes

an ACEA A1 B1 - A5 B5 in 5w30 , similar to the GM DEXOS1 oil would be slightly better for fuel economy at the expense of lesser values of resistance to shear and deposit control GM dexos information center Mobil one 5w30 is a DEXOS1 approved oil and ACEA A1 B1 - A5 B5

FE differences between ACEA A1 B1 - A5 B5 and ACEA A3 B3 - A3 B4 are measured in very small values .

because the oil change interval minimum on either of the above oils would be 6000 miles , even though they cost more than the much lesser quality oils , that are replaced at 3ooo miler intervals , the better oils listed above are cheaper to use - and either is infinitely a better oil

do not use 0w20 oil in your engine .
