1/2-ton Nissan getting Cummins diesel in 2015

Nissan and Cummins have announced plans to release a version of the 1/2-ton Nissan Titan pickup with a 5.0L Cummins V8 diesel in 2015:

This is a separate program than the 2.8L I4 Cummins Nissan Titan project, which has seen a few prototypes, but no announcements on actual intentions of mass-production:

This 5.0L V8 Cummins diesel was the engine that was originally going to be for the Dodge Ram 1/2-ton pickup back in ~2010. Cummins had their manufacturing lines all ready to go when the program got axed during Chysler's bankruptcy.

Earlier this year, Ram announced they'll be offering a VM Motiri 3.0L V6 diesel in their 2014 1/2-ton trucks:

So, it's gonna be Cummins vs. Fiat (VM Motiri) in truckville?!?!

this will make friends for sure, but cummins is the only reason i would ever buy a dodge.
not having a good diesel in the recent japanese trucks was the only reason not to buy one. can't wait for 2025 when i can afford one used

Ram is basically Fiat now anyway, so Cummins will still be selling their larger 6.7L to Fiat (Ram). The 6.7L Cummins also gets sold to Ford for their F650 trucks, as well as Freightliner, Paccar, and many others.

If Nissan would insist in a 4-pot for the 1/2-ton, the 3.8L would still be more suitable to meet the local market requirements than the 2.8L, altough this V8 sounds as a good option too. BTW it would be quite odd the Ram 1500 featuring a V8 when the heavier models featured a 6-cylinder engine, since the amount of cylinders in an engine is often perceived as a prestige feature.

I wonder what ford is thinking here? they still run IH diesels but own cummins and had thier tails handed to them by dodge from late 90s to mid 2k.
Now thier engine is going into a nissan also and thier still stuck with the IH engines.
This make big money for ford but other than that makes little cents. get it cents ??
Oh well I tried to be funny.

I'm pretty sure Ford doesn't own Cummins. That was a rumor years ago. Ford's 6.7l diesel is made in house, they don't use IH engines anymore.

A 3L V6 in the Dodge, and a significantly more powerful 5L V8 in the Nissan . . as said elsewhere, imagine the reaction of those for whom dentistry is less important than "Ammuricun made".

I agree, also, that Nissan will likely need to make their truck perform to 3/4-1T standard to get the best use of this motor. The transmission[s] will be the biggest deal of all (in re customer acceptance).

RAM screwed this one up, big time. I may not trust a DODGE dealer to have a qualified tech (and I don't, not without scads of references) so being able to go over to a big truck Cummins shop -- parts and service -- has always been a source of relief. I'm far from alone in this. A family of Cummins-powered vehicles would have been the right step (no matter how good the foreign diesels they'll need service eventually . . where in Wyoming will I find such?) as brand loyalty is very big among those who use vehicles to make money. The dealer/customer relationship is different than for daddy-commuter . . owning a 1T diesel work truck morphs easily into choosing another same-fuel family vehicle.

DD have you at hand a weight/dimensional comparison of the I6-6.7L and the new V8? FIrst one on the block with a stand-alone controller for that V8 . . . .

.

Rick's correct on this.

1) Ford doesn't run IH diesels anymore. They make they're own 6.7L V8 for their F250-F550 trucks. They also offer the Cummins 6.7L I6 (a completely differnt engine than the Ford 6.7L) in theit F650 trucks.

2) Ford doesn't own Cummins and never has.

I don't have the numbers handy. I know the whole project, which Cummins dubbed "Light Duty Diesel" has been through lots of iterations. Back in the day (~2008), they were going to have a 4.2L V6 and a 5.6L V8 versions:
New Cummins V6 and V8 Diesel Engines - Exclusive Preview - Diesel Power Magazine
At some point the V6 got scrapped. Like I said earlier, Cummins had a signed contract to make the 5.6L V8 for the 1/2-ton Dodge Ram pickups in ~2010. Cummins had the manufacturing lines all built and ready to go. I've toured the manufacturing facility in Columbus, IN, just down the road from where I live. Then Chysler axed the contract during their bankruptcy.

Since then, Cummins went looking for another customer and pretty much re-did the whole design, transforming the 5.6L into a 5.0L.

I've seen all kinds of specs for the various generations, but I'm not sure where the final 5.0L specs have landed.
