2001 Pontiac Aztek GT 27 MPG Highway Roof Rack Delete

2001 Pontiac Aztek GT, 3400 GM 4 speed automatic. Roof rack delete. Drove it on this years vacation about 7000 miles in 2 1/2 weeks. Highway mileage on the interstate at 70 mph stayed at 27-28 mpg. This with 4 people in it and the cargo area loaded with camping and clothing items. Not to bad for an SUV of this size. This is better mpg than the Pontiac Montana minivan of the same year.
For those that are reading this and have one, take the luggage rack off the top. They look better without them and you'll instantly gain better gas mileage. Comes off real easy. Use a screwdriver to pry up the plastic cover clips at the end of each top rail. There will be a slot to put the screwdriver in at the the top. Once off, unloosen the sliding roof rack and slide them all the way back and lift off. Re-install the plastic cover clips. You're welcome :)

That's pretty much the mileage I got in my Subaru Legacy Outback, but it had a roof rack and all wheel drive.

If only the roofline were a true Kammback!

Smaller, but fits 4 people and a lot of stuff in the back. AWD comes in handy too. Too bad a $10 thermostat failed on it and the engine toasted. But it was a good efficient car while it lasted.

My point is the Aztek could/should do better. It's so tall there is wasted space, and a higher CDa. I don't mean to knock it, but I've never liked it.

27mpg is quite good for a vehicle that size, especially with an automatic. So please accept my compliments.

I used to own a 2001 Aztek, I loved it. Never did any mods to it. Do you have some pics?

Great MPG numbers btw !

For some reason, I prefer the Aztec Concept. Headlights are nicer and the roofline does not look as steep as in the final version.

I'll try and get a few pics up of both my Azteks. Do wish the roof was sloped back better instead of some Prius on 'roids or odd trapazoid. However for it's intended purpose, it worked out great! Was able to camp out in the tent a few times when I got tired of driving. Room for the kids, decent MPG, mini camper, it was awsome!

Pics!

The Aztek tent option came in real handy on our trip out west.

Down with unneeded roof racks!

I wouldn't mind having one that I could keep in the garage for the 10% of the time when one might come in handy.
