2001 V8 and no EGR?
 

While browsing around the other day I came across a fact that really got me curious. My 2001 pushrod 5.9L V-8 DOES NOT have an EGR valve?! I've been able to find that it was something to do with the Dodge JTEC engine control computer, but unless I want to buy one, I can't really find anything online about these. There's no variable valve timing or anything fancy like that, the engine is virtually unchanged from its 1971 creation, but it is able to pass light truck emissions through the 2003 model year. Any thoughts or ideas?

Well, it seems that the point of EGR is to reduce combustion temps for the purpose of reducing NOx. Maybe it doesn`t need EGR because mediocre compression ratio (8.9:1) and volumetric efficiency (only 335ft*lbs from a 5.9l?) mean the temps aren`t that high anyway. Or maybe they spent a few extra bucks on good catalytic converters to neutralize that stuff. I could be wrong.

The 5.9 "Heavy Duty" was simply a 5.9 V8 without as much in the way of emissions controls. The HD rating was just an emissions thing, not a performance thing.

Just do the intake manifold leak fix and slap a HUGHES ENGINES cam in it. With a set of Tri-Y headers that ol 360 ought to keep chugging for many more miles.

As a MOPAR guy I'm surprised you ask the question: Extra Care in Engineering. When it came to the drivetrain there was no competition from Ferd or Chubby in the good old days . . when those guys were worn out the Dodge just needed a light hone and new rings and kept going. Had to get it right the first time as the other guys were bigger and had more money to fix mistakes later.

I had a 2001 with a V8-318. The 360 is the all around better choice.

Is there a larger question? Fuel economy? Vehicle application specific?

chrysler changed the 3.9, 5.2 and 5.9 in 92 with the magnum series of engine. chrysler actually changed something with it's cam grinds to allow the egr to be deleted.

same goes for the jeep 2.5 and 4.0(ended in 06). and no chrysler has had vvt except for the new pentstar and the 5.7 hemi(i think)

The 5.7 got VVT in 012, but the 2.0 and 2.4 have had it since 07.

The Heavy Duty designation actually means having a GVWR over 8500 lbs (actually classed as a Medium duty truck) which at the time (maybe still) had different emission standards.

The truck can be as heavy duty as it wants, but I have two choices of 5.9 V8s: VIN code EML (the regular) and VIN code EMM (the HD). Parts-wise, the differences are emissions parts and the oil dipstick tube. All the other parts are for EMO (any 5.9 V8).

Not sure if this useful information, but for the chrysler LH line, pre-2002 all had egr, then 2002-2004 did not. maybe they decided it wasn't worth it.

Yep. My truck (2000 Dodge) also does not have EGR. I think they started installing EGR onto the 2005+ Dakotas.
