2012 Mustang Kammback
Hello all,
Would anyone be willing to add the tear drop template in the most aerodynamic way to an image of my vehicle? I will be posting it shortly, as my image is almost 10x too big to upload. I have desired doing the Kammback all along, but as a member mentioned using a bike rack as a frame- I think it is a huge opportunity to make one. I am in process of the underbody, but since hitting 39 mpg, I want 40. The underbody will help me, and I think the Kammback will be a great addition. |

Here is the website you can use to do more templates
http://www.weirdcalculator.com/test/aero_template/ all you have to do is align the 0 with the highest point on the roof This good enough? http://ecomodder.com/forum/attachmen...8&d=1369439492 |

Thank you Gealii! I am not very familiar with rear flow, and boat tails/kammbacks, is this the generally accepted best way to do this? I wasn't sure of this, verse starting the layout at the very front. I am not familiar with it, so I definitely need the assistance. |

UltArc, some good news bad news for you.
Bad news, I don't think that a "Kamm" will do anything other than hurt your cars aerodynamics. Good news, Your car is pretty dern aerodynamic to begin with, and you don't have to build a Kamm. Here's why I say this. First, keep in mind the Kamm is meant to remedy a hideous aerodynamic situation on a car which has lousy aerodynamics to begin with. http://www.productioncars.com/send_f...t_red_1985.jpg Uh..Yeah Your Ford was designed by folks who wanted to make the car as aero as possible here in modern times. One of the key indicators of this is how close it already is to the Aero Template. I have it illustrated here with the newly minted "Faster template" and as you can see it is very close. http://i39.tinypic.com/jaetfr.jpg One of the main things to really get excited about with your cars aero is that there is a smooth arc from the base of your front window to the bottom of your rear glass. This my friend is Aero Gold. People put Kamms on their crappy aero cars hoping to come close to what you have to start with. http://i40.tinypic.com/2w5sp3r.jpg Ford has certainly tweaked the sides of your car to match the flow going over the top, if you screw with this, you'll certainly pay a price. Bottom line is that your car has been optimized for what you have, short of redesigning the entire car to look like this, http://media.caranddriver.com/images...s-original.jpg all you can hope to achieve has already been done. At least in the back. Do seriously consider a grill block if you have not put one on already. |
Ummmm...
'84 Escort = .36 Cd (or .38- depends on source: http://autopolis.wordpress.com/2011/...e-down-effect/ ) '12 Rustang = .36 Cd No doubt the Escort enjoys a nice frontal area advantage too... http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r...psc47603c2.jpg Squinting... can't... read... Cds... in... aero... section. But I do love that aero arrow illustrating the flow over the roof! http://vz.iminent.com/vz/0897b7f5-fa...y-laughing.gif |
With the Mustang, where does the air go that hits the top part of the bumper and the grill? Is all of that supposed to enter the engine compartment?
Did they put tons of effort into making a car pretend to be aerodynamic? |
