300zx Aero mods
Today I made a few tweaks to my 1990 300zx
1. delete rear wiper, pulled motor and arm, popped in a flush mount plug 2. upper grill block with plastic sheet, to replace the vinyl I has on as a test. I will post pics in the next few days, looks a lot smoother. |
Sounds good. Have you noticed any improvements in MPG yet?

These sorts of threads need pictures! :)

And fuel logs!
|
|
I haven't driven more than a few miles yet with these mods, and I haven't kept fuel logs.
|
man, hope it's still stock under the hood, because it might get super hot (assuming you got the twin turbo version) :)

Seriously though, without keeping fuel logs you'll have no way of knowing if things help or hurt. Its really a necessity. |
It's a non-turbo, 3.0L V6, only mods are Air intake and exhaust. I had it taped up all last summer, the only time I saw the temp rise a bit was sitting in traffic on a hot day for 15 min without moving, once I got past the jam it cooled right down again.

Nice.
I just have this urge to pop in a little 3-4 cylinder engine and crop the front end back a bit... |
I don't think you'd want to drive one of those with a 3-4cyl, it's a heavy car.
I think the 300zx starts out with an amazingly low cD. The shape is just about perfect. Still looks up to date too, 20 years later! |
After seeing the sticker on your fuel door, I thought the punch line was going to be: it's electric!
(Isn't that a plug icon?) |
cD is 0.32
The boxy 80s one was lower.. 0.30 Weird. |
i guess the cd depends a lot with the front bumper... somebody got a wind tunnel here ? :D
anyway, the 300ZX is 1,7 tons, so it's pretty heavy (but still, a friend of mine got one, twin-turbo, 450hp, and does 18-19mpg (okay that's not super great, but considering the engine, the output, it is ^^) Will you try lightweight rims ? you can save a lot (if you remain calm on the pedal :D) if you do a lot if city-driving - start n' stop. |
well, the electric plug sticker is a bit is wishful thinking, i'd like convert it eventually. I also like the funny looks I get while driving, lots of double takes. It's showing my support of EVs. :)
I think of keeping my stock 16" wheels as the lightweight alternative to "upgraded" 17 or 18" wheels. I have thought about low rolling resistance tires. I also think the salt flat racer moon disks would be bad a**, to give it the retro future concept car look |
love these. my buddy is building one for 900whp right now.
go to Home Depot and grab some garden liner and make a nice lip for the front |
There is something even better at Home Depot-- the foam garage door seal. It would jut out a bit and form a lip, but unlike the hard plastic garden liner it won't damage the bumper when it scrapes
