60 MPG club

I finally broke 60 MPG! I did a 64 MPG tank with half of it being my 7 miles each way daily commute and the other half being a 350 miles highway trip with the cruise control at 53 mph.

I will soon install side and wheel skirts and replace my 200k miles rear wheel bearings. I have a 650 miles highway trip coming up in september and am really looking forward to break the 70 MPG mark.

I really need to get summer tires (I got the car with 2 winter sets so I use what I have), plus I have out of spec negative camber in the rear. Once I get that fixed up I should get really good numbers.

Congrats! You can definitely do 70 in the TDI. It will be funny to take a 650 mile trip and still have gas left over in your tank!!
Are you already in the 700 mile club on tdiclub.com?

Tas - that's a huge leap above your previous best tank (55.6). What was the secret?

I'm guessing 53 mph for 350 miles. What's your fuel economy at that speed?

Nice work!

My previous best tank was the same kind of tank except the highway part was driven at 55 mph.

I since deleted the passenger side mirror, and removed the radio antenna, blocked the intercooler grill which gave an aero advantage along with hotter air. I also enlarged the turbo bleed so I get more part load boost.

Welcome to the club, ;)

Congratulations

Man Im jealous. I want to upgrade to a car with more potential but im trying to hold of a couple of years. It looks like 2010 will be when we really start seeing some new options.

Congrats Tas...and double-congrats if those are US-mpg figures!

Wowza! Nice job.

Yeah, that much distance locked into a good FE speed is what I need to do more of. I've been noticing about that in my own travels -- when I can operate at my optimum speed, I usually can't stay there for long because of peripheral traffic, geography or some other inconvenience (ie. no cruise control) that pops up.

Congratulations! I'm a bit jelous as I've been hovering about the high 50s for a while now.

Gascort, nope I'm not in the 700 miles club just yet. I refilled at 673 as I was eager to see how well I did, but I still had a quarter tank left.

Darin, the SG is not working right on my TDI, but I'm pretty sure I was at more or less 70 MPG at 53 mph. We'll know for sure on my next long highway trip.
