98 escort wagon hatch idea

Hi guys, I have a 98 escort wagon and I was closin the hatch the other day and it hit me...... This hatch could pose as a boat tail if propped open partially. Any one done this?

You should do this!

It hit you? I hope it didn't hurt too badly. :-)

it might work - not sure what the shape is though that you've got to work with.

Got most of the basic stuff done, maybe wheel well covers next.

Check out my profile pic, itll give u an idea of the shape.

Hmm, the angle is much to steep and as it hinges upwards it creates quite a bump. If you are really determined, then you could loose the hatch and make your own that is more ideal.

Might get CO poisoning if you don't have sufficient ventilation.

my thoughts

Most importantly it poses a CO hazard. With the hatch open, there will be airflow issues from the side that you would have to test to know how to deal with. I personally like the idea of using the current hatch skeleton to fashion a new boattail-esque profile perhaps ending in a kammback.

if you're looking for an easy mod i'd experiment with a lip spoiler, most cars of this type have them these days.
also small ridges to detatch airflow at rounded corners are beginning to appear

if you want to go all the way get a second hatch and graft on a boattail extention or build something that attached to the hatch, hinges

it's a nice idea, but i'm affraight it won't work in the real world

Did you measure the hatch? Most hatches are wider at the bottom than it is at the top... ;)
