A123 Systems batteries now available for purchase online!

Hi all - Dan from A123 Systems here. I've seen quite a few discussions about A123's technology in these forums (thanks for the interest and support!), so I wanted to share some exciting news: for the first time, you can purchase authorized A123 battery products online!

Through an authorized distributor, A123 is selling our NanophosphateŽ ALMs, which are off-the-shelf solutions designed as drop-in replacements for lead acid batteries for a number of applications. To purchase, just visit our ALM Web page and click the "Buy ALM Now!" button at the top right.

Happy shopping, and remember that we are always interested in learning about the creative ways our customers are using our products, so feel free to connect with A123 via our Social Media channels and tell us about your application!

Hello Dan. Thanks for stopping by and informing us of this progress. Its good to see A123 opening its doors to someone other than just OEMs.

Here is a link to the page where you can purchase these batteries:

Do you know if A123 is going to continue this strategy across its product lineup? More specifically in regard to the AMP20 cells.

Thanks Daox (and I appreciate you including the link). Plans for selling other products online are TBD, but if you have an application, I'd suggest visiting the Contact Us section of our Web site and telling us about it. Your submission will be forwarded to the most appropriate channel/distribution partner and someone will hopefully be in touch!

Do these packs have a built in BMS?? I'm not seeing any specs for charging them and if they are designed as a drop in replacement for lead I would assume that they would.
I have to wonder tho with the 30 amp peek draw is that a sustained peek or a momentary peek, with the DeWalt packs they can handle 15 or so amps sustained but the BMS on them burns out if you have a fraction of a second surge, because batteries like that would otherwise work great for a lot of battery electric lawn mowers but the start up surge of the motor is more then 30 amps.

I really would like to use those AMP20 cells or something like them to make starting batteries.

Ryland - I'd suggest downloading the ALM User Guide as that should have all the information you are looking for (I can't include the link as my post count hasn't reached 5 yet, but you can get it from the ALM product page).

Oil Pan 4 - If you visit the Contact Us form on our website and fill out as many details about your application as you can, your request will get forwarded to the right person at A123 (or perhaps one of our channel partners). Again, same deal as above...I can't include the link but 'contact us' is at the top of any of our Web pages

Thanks both for your interest!

It would be really nice if that link on the web page was under a normal text links on the left side bar instead of being a photo/link that has to be clicked on.

Peek amps is listed as 54amps for 200ms, so not bad, not ideal seeing as the cells have a 100c rate, that would be over 400 amps peek discharge on a 4.5amp hour battery, perfect specs for starting batteries.

My diesel with the gear reduction starter draws about 330 amps on start up.
Thats after several seconds of glow plugs drawing 100 amps.
Then I have the intake heaters, which I dont use very much, they draw 80 to 90 amps.
I would need 2 banks of cells to be safe.

Dan, I've used the contact us form as you suggested. It has been nearly a week with no reply. Should I be expecting any reply?
