doesnt quantify your statement that aluminum can not be the main part of an alloy (aluminum alloy)

I think rims are never in pure aluminium, so when it comes to rims it will either be an iron alloy or an aluminum alloy.
Or... you go mental and get some ultra lightweight magnesium racing rims...

and word has it that some rims are made of steel...

But these are technicalities; we see steel as a product by itself that needs no further clarification so although it is technically an alloy, when we refer to alloys we usually mean the kind we're less accustomed to than steel.

"we"? I don't. There are numerous steel alloys with varying amounts of carbon/moly/chrome/etc...

Sure, there is an abundance of steel alloys, it is just that... you know... Splitting hairs gets difficult for a nearly 50 year old with receding eyesight.

It is similar to the terminology used when talking about the writing part of a pencil... many people still call it "lead" (e.g. the lead of the pencil) while it certainly no longer contains (or possibly even never has contained) lead. Yet most people understand what it means, even if it is technically incorrect.

Same with "alloy wheels" ... while steel certainly is an alloy, the common understanding of that term is that it encompasses aluminum alloy wheels but not steel wheels, even though that's technically incorrect.

There are many common understandings like that which are not technically correct; how many of us say that the "sun rises"?? It's fine as long as the meaning is commonly understood. Can either be pedantic and correct every person or just go with it...
