Adding acetone to gasoline
Well, I found a good spot to ask. Seems everyone has their own experience and opinion on this..
Does adding ACETONE, (some say Toluene and some say Xylene, all available at Home Depot, Acetone at Walmart in nail section, 100% pure) DO ANYTHING? GOOD OR BAD? *to pump gasoline Unrelated, but I found that laquer thinner in gas does NOT clean a catalytic converter, but does make whole car run better, if done in one nice, long, hot shot. Scott Kilmer is wrong. I didn't destroy the car, either. And I used a strong concentration.. |

I'm thinking of adding urea to my gasoline.

The engine runs the same as if it would on pump. Depending on the batch I will adjust the fuel and timing tables to keep my A/F ratios the same as pump. |
Automotive homeopathic remedy?
An occasional few 100ml dose of acetone is a good engine cleaner. I did try regularly adding small amounts to no noticeable effect. |
I have done it in the past, and had seen mild MPG improvements. Supposedly it helps to clean valves and combustion cameras from built up. But that was on carb'ed motorcycle.
I think it may destroy catalytic converter and is not compatible with rubber fuel lines, so it may be not much harm to use it in small quantities as a cleaner, but long term would not recommend, YMMV |
Why acetone in gasoline doesn't work to improve fuel mileage.
1) it has lower energy content than gasoline per volume. 2) it lowers the octane rating (it used to be used as a winter time diesel fuel additive to aid in starting). 3) it can eat fuel lines and plastic parts thus causing leaks. |

I only ask because we haven't heard from these guys lately: Cli-Fi.Net (blog): The Urinator: A green hybrid car that runs on urine! |
I personally have used acetone in my Jeep Grand Cherokee, and have gone from 18mpg to 22mpg whenever I use it for a 4mpg improvement(around 18% increase in fuel economy)!!

It's not even April 1.
