Aerodynamic wind noise suppression - 1951 Mercury custom

I have a 1951 Mercury custom car which I love to drive. It has a LS-1 and gets 22-23 mpg at 70 mph. However it has horrible wind noise which also means that it has a lot of drag going on. I would like to design a removable front dam large enough to help airflow and kill some of the wind noise at the A pillar and B pillar. The B pillar is especially noisy as it has a thick post with the window indented catching air that enters the door too. Another option: I thought "wind wings" might be the answer for the B pillar noise, so I built large Lexan wings that attached to the front of the door and extended out about 5". Even that was not enough to kill the noise on the B pillar. Any ideas folks? Thanks, Brent |
Have any pictures? Some of us have no idea what your car looks like.

It won't let me post a pic until I have 5 threads? I have one or two very old ones maybe. I'll try to get the pics up on dropbox or something.

I think you need 5 posts but i am not sure. Not sure i can help you even if i saw the pictures :)
But there are people here who certainly can help you. Welcome to the forum btw. |
5 posts I believe, not threads, so you could comment on 3 other threads at this point.

If this is it, that is a pretty sweet ride. I am jalous. |
Does it look anything like this?

From the same link, one with mirrors. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3Ltbcs9D9z...coupe%252B.jpg Do you have side view mirrors? They might be a source of wind noise. If you have vented windows and mirrors like the black one below, perhaps those are noise sources. https://www.barrett-jackson.com/Even...M-COUPE-138049 http://cdn.barrett-jackson.com/stagi...nt_3-4_Web.jpg The devil is in the details, we need more information, and visual is best. |
Bent: added your pic to your first post.

Thanks!

Those mirrors appear to be the culprit of the noise.
On some Nissans this was also an issue, so they made the front signaling lights protrude outwards to deflect the air past the mirrors. Cool solution but the slightest bump and you have to replace the whole headlight assembly. |
