Chevrolet's full-size Silverado has a 4-cylinder turbo option for 2019. (Has there ever been a four in a full-size before? Does the Toyota T-100 count?) It even has a cylinder de-activation mode, capable of running on 2 cyls. It's a big four: 2.7 L, which is the same size as one of Ford's EcoBoost V6's. Details:

GM just went to a whole new level of respect for me.
Does that mean 3 cylinder sedans are in the future (besides the Mirage)? If only the FE technology being applied to trucks and SUVS was being aggressively applied to cars....mid-size sedans would be getting Mirage numbers without trying. |
Ahh, but nobody is buying (American) sedans. And, the Japanese are downsizing and adding turbos too.

Seems like a lot of wasted space up front, maybe they could add a turbo heated BBQ grill up there. Have some ribs ready when you get to your destination.

If they pipe in fake V8 sound, the average buyer probably couldn't care less.
As always, I'm rather skeptical whether long-term costs associated with a more highly stressed turbo engine ultimately make it much lighter on the pocketbook. |
Oh, I dunno. I see a business opportunity if we get in early enough producing decals of Calvin peeing on an I4 engine block.
No? |

Trucks are the perfect platform to have a small, weak ICE engine and a powerful electric motor and midsize battery. Make it faster than a V8, but more fuel efficient than a small pickup, and people will buy them up. |
