ANY hope for a fullsized flatbed pickup?

1 Attachment(s)
86 Ford F250 (3/4 ton, single rear wheels) extended cab, 6' x 8' flatbed.
factory fuel tanks located on the left side of the truck as well @ the rear will be deleted - providing additional potential to cleanly release air off the back.
please note: this picture depicts the standard bed. it will be replaced by a flatbed.

any and all constructive ideas are appreciated.
i want to shrink/fold away the outside mirrors. i have a laptop and a USB webcam i could use but actual (not virtual) rearview through the sliding rear window would be a +.

those who responded to my other post, "project groovy" thank you for your input your suggestions are being considered. the project is currently on hold - no tengo dinero ;[
and a BIG thank you to the tireless posters in regards to its paint,
in case you missed it, the subject at hand was: A E R O D Y N A M I C S.

There is hope for everything! I have a very similar truck that without any aeromods consistently gets 25 city and 30+ highway.

Not sure whats under the hood but it should be efi get a MPGuino and learn to drive the truck with the least amount of throttle input as possible.

loose the running boards or remount them as side skirts. make sure the clutch fan isn't locked up, start with a grill block and flush head light covers, fastback bed cover, so on and so on.

Here we go with the 30 mpg F150s again.

Tell me where you live; I want to come out and take a test drive with you. I will even show you how to make a gas log entry.

Your just mad that you can only squeeze 17 outta yours:p

Gas logs are coming just need more miles.

you think i could meet you on the way to save on gas?
i'll bring donuts!

american trucks are aero-toilets. i had a 71 VW bus 1600cc gas NA
and i could squeeze it to 29mpm
although a brick it had a hint of aerodynamsim, and it didn't have
4 pistons scratching around in their sleeves. once we get there could you conduct a clinic for us? i would love to learn your driving technique.
my 240D gets 30 and my jetta with a 30 year old diesel gets 70.
with your help i could go 80 - i can't wait.

fully mechanical diesel. it might have an OBD plugin but no info from the engine to feed it.

all parasites will be fumigated, variable grill choke is in the conceptual stages
it will have twin bosh eurovan electric fans.
how would you design/fab a fastback. what angles would you use on a
flatbed?

were u thinking exhaust augmentation? that would only work on a toy sompin like the one litre VW !

6.9L V8 big block. IDI single ATS turbo it is older so likely has a wastegate.
no intercooler but i will be adding one...
almost always on except for idle, pre- turbo water injection and a post turbo setup for high loads/hills. the muffler is going to be donated to a local scrap yard.
it will have a 2 tank setup with REAL heated injector lines - no 316 wires.
unfortunately it is auto and i have no info on the final drive, sorry.

Don't want to get off topic, but last I checked you only needed to fill up once to start a gas log. Like Frank I'm a bit skeptical of a 30mpg F150.

Drive very, very, very slowly, and you can get 25mpg on diesel while using the truck as a truck.

Most of the suggestions made regarding Project Groovy apply here, but they all cost money, which you won't have if you commute in an F250.

Is there any hope, you ask? Yes, there is hope for saving lots of fuel through ecomodding. Driving style and simple mods will save you more gas than I burn in my Insight. But no, there is no hope for having a truck that uses as little gas as a car. The laws of physics prevent that.

CoastRider 11-25-2009 09:39 AM

Fill up Ha I wish. I pump 4 gal and go till it runs out, which is always at least 100 miles. depending on what I'm up to I may put more in I'll be using up the last of 7 gal today, I'm at 194 miles so far thats 27.71 MPG. Driving technique..... If its flat or downhill or there is a stoplight/sign ahead I accelerate for about 60 ft in 2nd gear push in the clutch and kill the motor. I am worse than eboneezer scrooge when it comes to gas lol.

Now enough with the highjacking.

The truck in the pic, I assume just for generic reference?

what are you using the truck for? whats it hauling or pulling? that auto is going to hurt OverDrive and preferrably a manual is a necessity for FE.
