Any Saturn SC2 mpg results?

I just started on the site with my first eco car. 2002 Saturn sc2 5 speed. Im coming from the world of racing where I currently have a big block 68 Camaro, and a 1000 hp turbo 2001 Trans am. I always been interested in squeezing every last ounce of power out of a combo and I have the same interest in mpg on my new project.

So far I have done the injector cut off switch, sealed up the hood and headlamps, syn oil change and upped the tire pressure to 44psi. Im practicing with p&g and I should have my scan gauge waiting for me when I get home today.

My biggest challenge is my commute. Its 10 miles each way in Chicago traffic. My ride home is alittle easier as its later in the evening with less traffic. So far on one tank doing 165 miles of horrible cold weather city and 100 miles of straight highway using p&g ive gotten 31.5mpg. I could have gone farther on that tank but I refilled at 1/4 tank.

Any other saturn guys out there so I can compare and get some advice?

Thanks
Alex

Thanks for the link. I found a few guys getting some good mpg on the saturns. I hope I can some how get in the upper 30s in the city. The stop and go traffic is killing me though.

Read up on the hypermiling techniques. As a result of employing some of those techniques, my city mileage is almost as good as my highway mileage at this point (also partially due to poor aero and gearing, though).

ladogaboy, are you doing eoc or p&g? Its tough always killing the engine in the city.

1998 SL2 auto is my daily.

I have a semi-urban commute with lots of stop/go (outside D.C.). 10 miles, 9 traffic lights, 2 stop signs. Some lights I have to wait for more than a cycle. Average speed is around 25mph, and I hit 60 on the highway for approx 2 miles. I'm averaging just over 30 : 98 Saturn SL2 Automatic (Saturn SL2) | Fuelly

My 95 SW2 auto only averaged 28-29, and my manual 94 SW2 I was able to average 32 (although difference circumstances as that car was modified).

I've EOC'd and shut the engine off at lights and achieved 33mpg before, but it simply wasn't worth the hassle. I also don't want to modify my driving style in a way that will piss off other drivers in dense traffic (like some of the hypermiling techniques on here) I'm here more to do mods that will passively increase my mileage, not stuff that requires my full time attention. My DD is my lazy car, I want to keep it that way :)

Okay so my 31.5mpg is probably on par. Thats with eoc and p&g though. Id love to see what the real differance is. Im going to have to try a tank just driving the car like a normal person.

I'd be interested to see how you executed your injector cutoff switch.

In my LA driving with my 1997 SC2 I could get 31 MPG combined. This was with my pre-Ecomodder safe driver style + avoiding traffic jams as much as possible.

The SC2 will have better aero than my current SW2, so you would normally be in a better position to beat my MPG.

However, the big difference is the commute. 10 miles one way in Chicago traffic doesn't sound like enough time to warm up the engine, at least to me.

Do you have a block heater? Is the car parked in a garage or is it outside?

Its parked outside and its been about 20 degrees for that entire tank of gas. I dont have a block heater. Im going to make a warm air intake for it. Highway at 65mph with no ecomodding at all it did 42mpg after a couple hundred miles. The cold air has been killing me though, takes a while to warm up.

Ok. Yeah, it's gonna be hard to improve upon what you are doing, at least until Spring comes around.

You can do the plumbing pipe insulators for a quick/easy/cheap grill block.
