to achieve a mix of 70% fuel efficency to 30% cost....

Car payment = $300/mo(?)
new Car MPG = 45(?)
Old Car Payment.... paid off?
old car MPG = 25(?)

20mpg "increase".... Lets assume $4/gal
$300 car payment equates to 75 gallons per month above your present consumption
20x75.... 1500 more miles per month to equal out "financially"

Now lets assume your driving the "Insurance industry standard" 1000 miles per month
@ 20mpg = 50 Gallons = $200 gasoline ($4/gal)
@ 45mpg = 22.222 Gal = $88.89 ($4/gal)
Saved $112... Add $300... costs your $188 more per month than your spending right now

Hense why I haven't bought a new car in like 15 years...

I think it all depends on what the vehicle will be used for. Commuting: one person, two folks? Carry much junk in it? Short trips or long highway commutes?

I went with a base model 08 Yaris LB 5-speed. I needed a one person, economical, A to B commuting vehicle and this thing is perfect. I’ve had it on one long trip, 200 miles each way, and the seats did get a little uncomfortable. For my 60 mile/day commute it is just what the wallet ordered. With the back seat down it can fit quite a bit of stuff but I have an old Cherokee for hauling.

Who actually pays car payments though, :p

Get a first gen Honda Insight. If you are looking for stock MPG and cheap thats as good as it gets.

70 mpg pretty easily and some pretty seriously easy mods are still available.

drop a few flexible 12 volt solar panels on the dash and rear window platform and you passively charge batteries all the time opposed to draining your gas mileage.

Not me!

I second getting a used car, a Scion xA will give you great reliability and mileage.

lawls.... I was serious expecting someone to point out how flawd my "quick" math really was

joesgot4 04-23-2009 09:09 PM

i will be driving alot of long distances 300-1000 miles weekly trips so the car will have to be new ! do not trust a used car 1000 miles from home! did not know if hybrid would be worth it since most of my mileage (80%) is on interstate? it also needs to be fairly comfortable and a 4 door! so know what do i need?

Formula413 04-23-2009 09:20 PM

Once you put one mile on it it's a used car. ;)
