Big day tomorrow: the Blackfly's first e-test since cam swap & taller transmission

Its emissions test appointment is tomorrow afternoon.

EDIT: the procedure & pollutants being tested for the Ontario Drive Clean test can be found in this file: http://www.ene.gov.on.ca/stdprodcons...rod_080001.pdf

I'm seriously hoping the car's emissions haven't somehow been made worse by the cam change and taller gearing.

There is bound to be *some* difference from the previous test (we do it every 2 years in Ontario) due to the gearing, simply because the engine is going to be running at a different RPM on the dynomometer.

Fingers crossed...

Do they give you numbers or is it just a pass fail and do you have the numbers for the last one? Good luck

I get a printout with numbers. And I have the numbers from last time, so we'll be able to compare.

TomO 11-29-2007 03:48 PM

You should be fine and well within specs as far as emissions go. Don't sweat it. :D

MetroMPG 11-29-2007 03:54 PM

Well, I didn't get my test today. The garage called me this morning because their dyno was down, so I have to call them back next week and reschedule.

Nice to read your thoughts on it though.

Passed the emissions test today. Happily, TomO was right on the money.

I'll post a comparison of today's test and the one from 2 years ago when I dig up the previous figures.

MetroMPG 12-16-2007 01:16 PM

OK - here's the comparison.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

ASM 2525/CURB IDLE TAILPIPE EMISSIONS INSPECTION

June 9/09, odometer at 24,619 km.

Emission ... Limit / Reading @40km/h ...
Limit / READING @ idle

HC ppm ........ 66 / 10 ...................150 / 10
CO % ........ 0.37 / 0.0 .................
0.7 / 0.0
NO ppm ....... 505 / 1 .................... na / na
RPM ............ 2621 ....................... 823

Dilution ... 14.60 / 14.70 (don't know what this is) EDIT: for definition, see post #18.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Dec. 12/07, odometer at 14,481 km.

Emission ... Limit / Reading @40km/h ...
Limit / READING @ idle

HC ppm ........ 66 / 21 ...................150 / 6
CO % ........ 0.37 / 0.01 ................
0.7 / 0.04
NO ppm ....... 505 / 1 .................... na / na
RPM ............ 1709 ....................... 898

Dilution ... 14.51 / 14.04 (don't know what this is)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Aug 24/05, odometer at 2,460 km.

Emission ... Limit / Reading @40km/h ... Limit / READING @ idle

HC ppm ........ 66 / 9 ....................150 / 8
CO % ........ 0.37 / 0.00 ................
0.7 / 0.00
NO ppm ....... 505 / 53 ................... na / na
RPM ............ 1685 ....................... 634

Dilution ... 14.20 / 14.40 (don't know what this is)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

So what does it say? Some emissions are up, some are down. The worst 2007 increase (HC ppm @ 40 km/h) is now @ 32% of its max. allowable.

TomO 12-16-2007 03:24 PM

I'm curious as to the rather large jump in idling RPMs. Any mods that affect the idle speed?

And congrats on passing well within limits!

MetroMPG 12-16-2007 03:30 PM

Yeah - thanks. I'm happy I can keep my XFi cam.

As for the idling, that just seems to be the way the car is. It's never had a really predictable idle speed.

It was the same with the previous Firefly. (Hey... you just made me think: I should see if I can dig up the e-test from the first car.)

MetroMPG 12-16-2007 07:00 PM

No luck: unfortunately, I gave away my first Firefly's e-test papers to the new owner.
