BMW that's easy on fuel?

All of a sudden I need a car again, been looking at civics and other cars but I hate front wheel drive so much... In my younger days I had a 5 speed BMW 325is which was fun, don't remember what mileage it got because I had a company truck and money coming out the wazoo at the time and didn't keep track. How things change.

So, need a new max $1500 usd car. Anybody have good experiences and results?

This one was originally rated for 15 or 17 mpg, but I think it burns a lot less now. Ecomodding, baby!

e46 compact is the way to go.. I think.

BMW's are not easy on fuel... But diesels aren't so thirsty.

Might be easier on fuel but you pay for it in parts and repairs.

Jalopnik's answer to every car question.

Miata.

(seriously. You can possibly find a NA in that range, it will be fun to drive and thrifty, and it pushes with the correct wheels.)

I really don't see the connection.....or the common sense.......or the logic...
