Broke 50mpg! (1999 Camry 2.2L automatic)

I finally did it! How? Well had a trip to Douglasville,GA just outside of Atlanta about 270 miles one way did a fresh oil change yesterday morning 0-30w synthetic kept it around 55-60 mph and coasted down hills in neutral. 548.5 miles on 10.944 gallons = 50.12 :D

Wow! Very impressive for a Camry (with an automatic, no less!)!

Congratulations!!

I would be concerned about such a light weight oil in warmer weather, though. What does it call for? would think 5w30 would be thinnest it could take without engine damage.

Still, good work. What economy did you get with the regular oil?

I know I get slightly better economy on thinner oil too. My Volvo takes 5w40 (if only I can find it) until it gets to 104 degrees F, and 5w30 up to 86F.

I could maybe run thinner than 5w30 in the winter, except Arkansas winters can include 86 degree days!

Any thoughts on using Lucas oil for one quart of an oil change when using thinner than recommended oil?

Well on the bottle it says safe for cars that recommend 5-30. I have not thought about using Lucas. From my research 0-30,5-30 and 10-30 are all the same viscosity at operating temperature the only difference is starting and warming up. I believe they have that 5-40 at WalMart.

Hard to say on the fuel economy but I go more miles in between changes. I'd say at least 1mpg gain maybe 2

ShadeTreeMech 12-09-2013 12:54 AM

how long have you been using the 0w30? the first fuel log note mentioning it noted a couple mpg difference. And if they recommend it for cars recommending 5w30, then it may just be advancing oil tech that may be for the best.

Gotta love google. Got his from the mobile1 website http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...27XIJU3iLGinog
