-- Bye Bye Side Mirrors -- Help me out

I WILL be removing BOTH mirrors.

LETS NOT TALK ABOUT LAWS OR SAFTEY IN THIS THREAD LIKE ALL THE OTHER SIDE VIEW MIRROR THREADS!
(You can see WAY better with a convex mirror and it is legal in TX)

Now, I will be using two round convex mirrors inside the door like some of you have posted. My question is;

- Use 2" round mirror
- Use 3" round mirror

?

I am thinking 2" may be big enough and 3" just annoyingly big, anyone with interior mirrors have any suggestions?

-------------------------------------------------
And for predictions, how much do you think I will gain in mpg? (I will be removing both, remember); 38mpg right now highway at 65mph.

I was thinking about this when I was cruising down the highway earlier today. You know it's possible to comply with every law in N/A an still have no additionnal frontal area from any rear view mirror? All you have to do is embed the driver side mirror in the door (it might need to be placed lower that standard but still) and build a channel for it to meet the required view angle.

3". I tried 2" and it was too small. 2" works during the day, but because the convex shape makes the cars look smaller, it's annoying at night.

^ GREAT.

Do you have any pictures by any chance? I just want to see how unnapealing my interior is going to become :D

Update;

Bought two 3" convex mirrors off eBay, total price WITH shipping $7.52. :D Total cost of project (with mirror cover plates) I plan to keep under $20.

I will install them in my car first without taking the outside mirrors off to see how the visibility is and get used to it and then BYE BYE mirrors, I will let yall know.

Anyone with MPG gain predictions?

Here is my driver's side mirror mounted on a motorcycle stock (outside mirror for legal purposes) :

Here is my complete mirror configuration :

The 17" convex rear-view mirror is my rear-view HQ, and the interior side-view mirrors are my "just before lane change" confirmation mirrors.

I saw a 2.3% improvement from removing the passenger mirror and folding the driver's mirror flat - ABA (small samples) @ 55 mph / 88 km/h.

I used rectangular convex mirrors that are supposed to glue on to your outside mirror. They fit well against the window and work great.http://bp1.blogger.com/_2A3Fl4I3bzo/...Skirts+050.jpg

But I think your mirrors were also smaller and more aerodynamic than mine.

So what do you think? Oh and at about 65mph not 55mph (I really cant ever go that slow plus my car is in its more optimal range at 65mph so it gets better mpg)... ?

Maybe 3.5 to 4% or is that very optimistic?

MetroMPG 11-07-2008 11:48 PM

To be honest, I think it would be hard to predict - because every car is different.

Maybe you've heard the story about the mythical (?) Chevy Caprice where the Cd went UP with the mirrors removed. I don't know if it's true, but there you go. :p

Sorry to be unhelpful!
