c56 in 95 tercel??

Hello all. I have a 95 tercel with a 5EFE and a burnt 4 speed. I would like to run a close ratio box with 3.70 or so diff with .88 fifth. Will a c56 fit or would I be better off with a late c52? Im kinda thinking I want a taller 1st gear that is also why I am looking in this direction. Thanks for any help. Dave

If you can find a direct fit, aka original transmission option. A lot of these Toyota transmissions have the same or similar guts but a new bellhousing is NOT fun to make.

Reusing the Tercel bellhousing with the C56 or C52 makes the swap fairly easy. There is an entire write up on how to do it here:

TercelOnline.com Board - DIY: Corolla C52 manual trans swap to Terseo

FYI a C59 from a 98-01 1ZZ-FE. It has a .725 5th gear with 3.722 differential. That is the one I'd probably try to pick up.

Thanks for your time. What car would I look up to find this C59 Will I have to do any mods? I have a 95 tercel. I have been looking for a C51 and I found one at a dicey junkyard wants 250 with my 4spd for core. Thanks, Dave

The C59 came in the Corolla.

I'm not aware of any mods that need to be made other than what that write up says.

Its looking like i might end up just replacing the synchros in this 4 speed. Are there any sites or forums that have parts and recommendations for clutch types that are good? Thanks again for your help

I actually don't think a 4-speed is really bad at all. If you can just replace the synchros, it sounds to be a reasonable option.

Well hell I just found a 5 spd from a local jkyd says its a 1995-97 tercel. How can I tell by looking. Are there any pt numbers on it??? Thanks. Dave

I had both Tercel and a Paseo, and at one time was VERY into the Tercel Online forum. I can tell you from doing many engine and tranny swaps in both cars that the 5-spd from my '92 Paseo was good enough for 130mph top speed with only 150hp (Maybe less). The gearing also was able to provide 55mpg or better when I wanted it.

It would be a VERY easy swap. Direct bold on replacement for the 4spd from the Tercel.

Just my $.02
