Car static-electricity shock, Need help
 

My car has been shocking me every time I get out of it. I know it's from static electricity... At first the shocks were small and not too bad but its getting to bigger and bigger shocks. It's tearing up my nerves cuz I HATE getting shocked and I deliver pizza so I have to get out of my car 20-30 times a day and I'm scared to touch any metal after getting out.

I tried kicking the door shut, it shocked me through my shoe, I tried pushing it shut with the empty delivery bad and it made it WORSE some how, totally different type of shock.

My wife was making fun of me looking like I was gonna cry over a static shock so I got back in the car, shook my butt in the seat and got back out, shocked her and she was like "Damn! whats wrong with your car?!" haha. I think the seats are like a static factory, anyone know how to prevent this?

Foil everywhere.

its probably a combination of what you are wearing, and the seat covers.

A word of warning, when filling up make sure you have discharged against the car before filling up or you could very easily start a fire.

Make a habit of grabbing the metal tight then step out of the vehicle. Energy is transferred without the arc. If you are sensitive to static shocks pull out your keys and pick the longest one. poke it on the metal surface to discharge.

You could use an anti static device such as a grounding strap/chain but that costs money and may not necessarily solve your issue.

I've had this before, usually in the dry of winter. I've concidered two possible solutions. First grounding straps for the car. Years ago there were straps that hung from the frame of the car and dragged on the ground to dissipate static buildup. Second, carry a stiff wire and touch it to the ground before climbing out of the car. This might move the shock to the ground end of the wire instead of hand to door. Still have not tried either.

I would just bolt the 1 end onto the car and then the strap comes off the bracelet for easy disconnection

I had this on my Nissan Almera ever when the humidity was low(ish).
I tried to solve this by touching metal while getting out of the seat, but it had an all-plastic interior and the only easy grounded metal point was a screw in the cavity of the door arm rest. I put a finger on that and immediately hurt when lifting that ever so slightly on dismount. Should have put a 100M resistor in between for gentle discharge, maybe.

The cause was indeed the seat fabric.
I sprayed it with some salt water one day, that really helped for a while. The water evaporated of course, but the remaining salt is hygroscopic which makes the fabric conduct electricity just enough to prevent static buildup.

Even so the effect is temporary so you have to respray it from time to time. You will know when to do it.

I now have a more permanent fix; I traded the Nissan for a 2011 Honda Insight.

Check your clothes - I got a new coat and get a shock every time I get in/out with it on. With it in the boot no shock.

Yeah I build computers too, I have one of these bracelets but I wouldnt know a good spot to ground it in my car, plastic everywhere

I Appreciate everyones answers, I kinda figured everyone would take it as some kind of joke :)

I saw something online about rubbing the seats down with anti-static fabic softener sheets... That might be a good thing to try.

And im curious about the things that someone was saying drags on the ground to kill the built up electricity... Is it like a wire that drags the ground or what

I also had some problem with that static-electricity in colder weathers. That really sucks :mad:
