Cheapest new car ever, 2cyl, 33hp, 50 mpg! (Tata Nano)

Have you seen this yet? A new little car in India.

Interesting, it comes with only one outer mirror and one windshield wiper.

Not the cheapest new car ever, but cheapest lately :)

Daox 01-10-2008 08:57 AM

I've heard that a few companies are looking to make ultra-cheap (under $4000) cars. I kinda doubt we'll see them here in the US unfortunately. I think the aim was more for South America, Europe, and India/China.

Yeah, they would probably never allow them to sell it here in the same configuration. It only gets 50mpg though, seems like it could do better than that.

I wonder what size tires it has? They look smaller than mine :).

I'm embarrassed to admit I'm looking forward to the Top Gear review of this vehicle.

It's rear wheel drive, motor in back maybe? I'm pretty sure I would buy one if we could get it here in the states for anywhere near that price. It's only a few steps above my moped :D.

While it's interesting I don't like it, :p. Too unsafe and it'll just increase pollution and congestion immensely.

Safer than a motorcycle and as one of the reporters said, safer than five people on one motorcycle. I look forward toward to the Top Gear report on it aswell.

SVOboy 01-10-2008 01:11 PM

Yeah, but the issue is that it gives the illusion of safety in a country with some of the most dangerous roads in the world...if you've ever read about how reckless bus drivers can be in india it's easy to wonder how reckless tata drivers might be (and it'd be more dangerous for a car to hit 5 people on a motorcycle than another bike...).

Ditto, for the most part. I don't mind the safety too much. IMO cars here have almost gotten too safe. People need to be responsible for their actions, and so few pay enough attention while they're driving these days. I'm not advocating making cars less safe. I just want good drivers on the road so I don't have to pay (in money and mileage) for tons of safety features I wouldn't need if people just paid more attention.
