Civic Outsells F-150 for First Time Ever

New junk on the blogs:

Quote:

Coupled with GM’s news that the company will be closing plants and scaling back SUV production, the word that the F150 is finally not the country’s best-selling vehicle seems to put the final nail in the coffin of American gas guzzling. Sure, there are still tons of F150s selling (a lot of them to people who don’t really need them), but this change represents one of the biggest swings in the US auto market recently.

The numbers tell the whole story. Here are May’s top five selling vehicles:

1. Honda Civic - 53,299
2. Toyota Corolla - 52,826
3. Toyota Camry - 51,291
4. Honda Accord - 43,728
5. Ford F-150 - 42,973

Overall, most of the automakers were way down in sales, except for Nissan and Honda, with Honda posting an increase of 11%. Strong sales of traditional economy cars show that people are not just trying to save money on gas, but are buying less expensive, less powerful cars in order to cope with an economic slowdown.

So what does all this really mean? It’s hard to say. On the one hand, the Prius is the most searched for new car on cars.com, but hybrid sales are also slumping. It seems that buyers know about the fuel economy possibilities with hybrids like the Prius, but are getting scared off by the price premium and moving towards either no car or a small car like the Civic or Corolla.

The real question now is, will it stick?

Put another way, midsize and compact sedans outsold the F150 4 to 1. Thats pretty big news.

Only news that could have been better is that an American-made small car outsold the F150. Well, perhaps by the time I have grandchildren........

You mean a car made from parts shipped from all over the world .... but with an American name plate on the grille ?;)

Exactly. I mean a company with its HQ in the USA.

Living in Texas and realizing that 90% of the A-holes that drive trucks is to compensate for a small wiener, or some breeding $lut to ensure that she kills other offspring to ensure hers will grow up and breed, I can barely contain my happiness at this news.

I have been preaching this for years, that humans see height as a status or power thing. That's what these trucks have represented.

Another thing, why is it these morons can seem to swerve from following too close like their driving a Ferrari, forcing those behind them to lock up the brakes, but yet, continually I fail to see this selfish, wasteful behavior with 99% of car drivers.

I am all for a GVW and/or formulaic gas tax. You can easily base this miles driven between registrations/by EPA mileage average/by average fuel costs. And come up with a "registration fee"

Come up with that formula, and it will force people to drive something more efficient and keep trucks for what they are made for.

This will kill these things for good.

You want to drive a truck? Buy a farm and clean up the atmosphere with plants you grow, since you all have belched out enough hydrocarbons for 3-4 people.

No need for 5000 lbs battering rams. Want to drive a brick? Get an RV. You don't fit in a small car? Cut off your legs or get your stomach tied up!

And you know what I voted for Bush, so I'm not green radical. (Who's gonna admit that!)
