99 Camry Mileage

I have a 99 Camry with 178k with the 4cyl. Everything is still stock but I'm only getting 23mpg and hardly any city driving. Searching the forums everyone else is getting closer to 30 and more. I'm going to throw some new plugs, tripple check the air pressure, fluids, belts etc. Any body have any suggestions?

Should I look into a tuner, headers, exhaust, or start modding the aerodynamics?

Welcome to the site.

If you're taking it easy and following some of the 100+ hypermiling tips (link up top) you should be hitting 30 without too many issues. If you aren't driving the speed limit and letting off the gas early at lights, etc I can see 23 mpg being what you'd get.

I would check plugs and wires, but no need to just replace them because you think they might possibly be bad. Look at the plugs, see what color they are, check the gap. Measure the resistance of the wires and make sure the insulation is good. I'd make sure you don't have your brakes hanging up at all and the wheels spin freely. I'd also check the tires for abnormal wear to see if your toe is messed up.

Don't bother with engine mods. They yield the lowest gains unless you really go all out and rebuild an engine for FE. Start with driving technique. It will by far give you the biggest gain, then move on to aero and other mods. Check out the 65+ mods list up top for ideas.

Few years back I had someone bring in a big truck, said they were getting 8mpg suddenly when they had been getting 11-12. Turned out to be a transmission problem. Wouldn't shift into 4th, and being in 3rd it was suckin gas. Customer hadn't noticed the trans not shifting
