converting old EV into power generator
has anyone converted an old expendable EV into a power generator? i.e wind turbine or water turbine generator?
|
You could but you need a big structural tower and fairly long blades to get any useful power out of the inefficient motor turned generator. Probably cant get permits in most residential jurisdictions

I have as an example, a Lexus electric axle. It's 68 HP rating is 50 kW. Assume [arguable] parity for generation.

I think the best way would be to weld the spider gears and put it on top of a gravity vortex water mill, where it's up above the water. That would require a sizable creek and impoundment dam. |
There’s a huge Wind farm near Palm Springs, CA where you can take a tour to see the wind turbines up close. They are enormous if you’ve never been up close to one. At the entrance they have an exhibit of wind turbine designs through the years and how the first few iterations just did not last. The designs that seemed to hold up were at least twice as beefy as the first designs and they all integrated a brake to avoid overspeeding. One of the failed designs had a phrase that stuck out to me that was something like “Proving once again that designing a wind turbine is no easy task”.

The gearing is going to be different. I think at best youÂ’ll be disappointed by the power output considering how much work is required to build this from EV parts. Which is what Piotrsko already said.

It is an OEM component. Isn't that enough?
The discussion had trended to how big an installation would be needed for a 68hp axle. The swept area for the altermotor wold be much more manageable, plus the opportunity for gearing options. |
Better off with solar panels.
