Corolla diesel 1.8

Good evening,

I have a 1990 toyota corolla diesel tx 1.8. For calculating mpg how do i know when the fuel tank is full? When the fuel pump at gas station clicks for the first time? When the diesel fuel is visble through the fuel filling hole?

Thanks

It depends. Just do it the same every time. I use two clicks, for confirmation.

If the vent is clogged it may click off prematurely. Rock the car back and forth to see if it takes more.

If you fill right up to the neck, drive for a while afterward, lest the the fuel from an underground tank expands as it warms.

I think that filling up until diesel visible in tank filler neck is more reliable than clicks on gas pump because these have a hole whth a tube that is full of air and when the tube gets gas in it it is designed to click and shut off gas flow. This can happen with splash back when gas exits quickly from nozzle and bounces back and trips the cutt off mechanism without the tank being full, foam can also trip the cutoff mechanism when gas is poured quickly as this creates foam , it could be more beneficial to let the flow of gas out of nozzle be slow to avoid clicking of gas pump due to splash back and foamy fuel.

Would a tachometer help with fuel economy?

That's why I said 'it depends'.

Do you think a tachometer would be more helpful than a vacuum gauge?

A vacuum gauge is useless for an earlier Diesel.

I wish we got those small diesels in the US.

As others have said, just fill it the same each time. You can't be certain you're filling it to the same level each time, but if you track every tank, it'll average out to correct.

Was the Corolla never available with a Diesel in the US? Not even in the '80s?

I think we got 2 years of it, in the 80's.

There was a corolla diesel in the us if i am not mistaken it was 84 and 85. There also was a camry diesel in the us if i am not mistaken it was 86.

If anyone is interested in a 93 corolla diesel. You can get a corolla diesel 93 sent over to the us to miami for about 8,000. Transportation from miami onwards would be buyers obligation. If anyone is interested let me know.
