Crazy aeromodded Metro - chopped & teardropped
1 Attachment(s)
CoyoteX alterted me to this over at teamswift.net
Amazing lowered chop job. And it's an EV to boot. From: EVents 2005 06 25 - SeattleEVA http://ecomodder.com/forum/attachmen...1&d=1491352943 http://www.seattleeva.org/images/thu...x-P6250034.JPG http://www.seattleeva.org/images/thu...x-P6250035.JPG http://www.seattleeva.org/images/thu...x-P6250037.JPG |
I believe the whole drive train is in the back. The car's rear track width isn't stock either (it's narrower).
Those wheels. I think they're from an Olds Cutlass: they're the same as on my neighbour's car in the background of this shot... http://www.metrompg.com/posts/photos...file-fulls.jpg |
So what has the drivetrain changed to and what type of rearend is it. If I remember correctly those wheels have an extra hole for another lugnut. So whats the game lol?
|
Apparently 8 permanent magnet ETek motors: Here's the drivetrain:
http://www.seattleeva.org/images/thu...x-P6250036.JPG Though I only count three... Hmm. There are 8 cogs on the driveshaft however. |
Wow! Can't believe I never saw this. Amazing stuff!
|
That's awesome - I love the look of the rear end too :p My only caveat - that looks like a lot of unsprung weight o.0 Is there some suspension in there that I can't see?
|
I don't see any suspension. Only the tires.
|
suspension
That car looks awesome! I guarantee it rides like **** though. No suspension in the back unless the entire trunion back there moves. I would think that is a really poor design to have the batteries and motors move with the suspension. I love the way the car looks though - makes it look like a lambo.
|
It does kind of look like a lambo. Weird.
Consider what it was built for (drag strips). Are drag strips bumpy? |
Only three of the Eteks are installed - you can see the gears are paired; one of the aft Eteks isn't installed which is why 2nd left set of gears has nothing on it. The other four Eteks go in front of the gears with a chain going to the other gear.
|
I like the look of the car.. just hope you never have to replace any glass..
definatly not street legal anymore.. So its not really a car now.. |
I like the look from the "B" back. Gives the Metro a fastback.
|
I think a chopped top is the only stone that basjooz has left unturned.
Cutting frontal area is always effective. There are shops in southern California that do very professional chop jobs. Special glass makes all the windows fit and work perfectly. Needless to say…t’ain’t cheap. |
I found another chopped metro. This one is pretty wild looking

I've seen that one. It looks more "pancaked" than "chopped" :)
|
It's amazing how much a Metro looks like a CRX when it's flattened like that!

Didn't he just lay back the windshield ? ( Which is DPS safety rated ) As far as the side / hatch glass ... well I don't see any at the moment :p, but are cars required to have safety glass all around ? |

I read more about the car and those pictures are old.. There is no DOT approved safety equipment in it.. (airbag, seat belts, ect) The rear is solid, no suspension because its geared towards being an EV drag vehicle.. A car that small is already unsafe as it is on a freeway doing 55 surrounded by jackass's hauling butt.. Now people can roll right over ya without any problems :D It still looks cool.. |
why wouldn't that metro be street legal anymore?
|

read the reply above yours.. |
ah, well lets say safety glass, seatbelts, and a rear suspension are added. Would it be street legal then?
Oh, maybe there's a hight/weight limit for a vehicle to be legal? |
This thread encouraged me to show my Civic chop idea so, thanks MetroMPG.:D
|
Cd just sent me a link to a YouTube vid showing the chopped Metro doing a dragstrip run.
Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwDtmjnT3K8 |
14.9 :/ I was expecing at least a 12..
seems like dam near a minute of that video was unnecessary lol anyone else think it looks camaro like with the front end like that? cool nonetheless |
Thanks for posting that Metro !
I found out some more about the guy that races the car. His name is Dave Cloud, and he converts cars in the Seattle area. Here is a site with a car that he converted. What surprised me was this paragraph : Quote " On Saturday, May 10, 2008, the volt runner ran away with the honors at the Seattle Electric Vehicle Association's Marathon Rally in Everett. On a single battery charge, she covered 101.4 miles at 55 mph using lead acid golf cart batteries. " Very, very impressive ! The link : Home |
That's one hundred one miles at 55 MPH - on a single charge !!
( Well I thought that was impressive .) :) |
That IS impressive!
I think they had some extra-special batteries in it for that trip. But I believe the usuall range is still around 60-some! That's still a great range! |
" Using lead acid golf cart batteries "
I did read that more than the norm were needed, but still, very impressive ! |
Right, I guess that's what I really meant, is that they added ADDITIONAL batteries, but yes it is still very impressive.

Legality
The issue of legality for these cars depends on where you live. Here in Florida where it's legal to drive with no doors or hood this car would not be an issue. It is certainly safer than most of the dune buggies and go carts you occasionally see on the highway. This is probably why so many shops move to Florida where they can do almost anything with a car and don't have to worry about emissions and government regulation.
|
I've only got one question lol How much does he want for it lol
|
I would think if you retain the same glass, and belts your not violating anything. you just changed the angle of the windshield and the rear deck. Whats the big deal? As long as one dosn't go and mess with the suspension/Bumpers I think you would be ok.
