Crossover e-velomobile, PodRide

A tidy fossil fuel-free and urban conveyance, the Pod Ride. Swedish inventor Mikael Kjellman created a one-person four-wheeled pedal/e-motor velomobile that has the thoughtful combination of convenience, safety and rain/winter protection. Doorway-clearing, 250-watt e-motor & lithium batteries, 4-wheel drum brakes, waterproof body to keep you warm and dry in any weather, LED headlights and turn signals, heated (removable) windshield w/ wiper, padded seat, Rock Shock shock absorbers (studded tires in winter), small trunk and a tow bar for a bike trailer.

He just started a crowdfunding campaign in an attempt to raise $30,000 so the vehicle to be produced.

That's so cute!

He knows how to get the younguns' attention these days: show it drifting.

That stoppie/endo at the end of the dirt track video is going to scare off the greyhairs!

Proposing wheelie bars...in the front?

Kinda of a cool marketing factor that he took it on the BMX track. Add solar panels, fans/evaporative AC, cool aftermarket wheels & tires, overvolt the motor, extra LED lamps, wifi sound/subwoofer system and a dramatic dye-sublimation graphics on the fabric cover!

freebeard 04-14-2016 08:25 PM

I was so glad he dropped the up-speak for "Thanks for watching". That would be so wrong.

I like the Safari windshield and sun visor. It needs pop-out variable-track suspension.

Interesting! My 2003 E-Pod 3-wheeler never made it to mass production. That first link ran on to "5 Top" and 4 of the 5 were in the same time period. Time machine!!

Magajgfha 04-15-2016 06:26 AM

Too high drag.

I wonder if we'll ever see velos that are both affordable and efficient....

NeilBlanchard 04-15-2016 01:02 PM

I like it! I hope he builds it, and I would like to know the price.

It is no Quest, but it is lower drag than a regular bicycle.

Grant-53 04-15-2016 01:55 PM

This is one of the best machines I have seen. Shipping things like that can be tricky so selling the plans around the world is an option.

I was pedalling around town today thinking ——> What if it had a door with a 1950s space helmet in the top of it. You sit done and it closes onto your head. Height is adustable, H-point is fixed.

Christopher Jordan 04-17-2016 07:54 PM

I wish something like this would make it to mass production in a few months. If they take a few years - that is enough time for something like this article to come along and scare off possible buyers-

My compliments to this guy - first for producing it because of the amazing time and effort that goes into such things, and second for putting it out there for everyone to criticize! This guy is all right in my book.

Pedal / electric hybrid is awesome. More pedal, less electric, no gas. I'm in.

And, I'll do the nose wheelies - with every one of my gray hairs!

Stubby79 04-18-2016 03:20 AM

I want one!

Half the reason I don't ride to work is that it rains 4 months or more out of the year, or it's a bit too chill. I'd be willing to put up with a longer commute time, but I want relative comfort. Which means it would need suspension too...

Or a new kind of ABS that monitors vehicle pitch in addition to lock-up? :D

More like the short-wheelbase, higher CG and front brake bias causing it to pivot up that way. May compromise the compact packaging; maybe longer wheelbase, more rearward CG, less front and more rear braking bias.

Center of gravity below the roll center.

I have to admit, I really, really like that design, especially using what amounts to kayak-cloth fairing for the lightest possible weight and some decent protection to the passenger.

The 'stopples' I see in the second video do concern me a bit though-I wonder if lowering the passenger roughly two inches and elongating the frame another six would add some stability? Mind you, i'd buy one as is if-

A) I had the money :( and
B) The US didn't have this 'Four Wheels=Car' mentality.

freebeard 04-22-2016 11:23 AM

The wheelbase is too short—like a roller skate.

I wonder if the fabric weighs any less per sq unit area than the plastic windshield.

They say you can ride an Arcimoto SRK in the rain and stay dry. Not that I've had the opportunity.

Over his Indiegogo target

Hope he gets a good fabrication and marketing team/supplier together, and start his international sales sooner.

NeilBlanchard 04-22-2016 12:41 PM

He has raised 113% of his $30K fund raising goal! That is good news.
