CRX for sale, what do you think?

I ended up taking the long backroads home from working out of town.

On the side of the road I found a CRX for sale. The guy is asking $900 OBO

What do you think it is worth?
What kind of mileage do you think I could get out of it with just basic modifications?

It is not pretty - definately needs a little body work. I am assuming it is a bit rusty underneith. Things always are in this area. It was really muddy, and I was wearing my good clothes, so I didn't get down in the mud there.

It's missing the drivers side turn signal light cover.

A couple more photos of the car are HERE

Buy it hard! But try and get it for a little less.

Go back with your work clothes and make sure it's not swiss cheese underneath. Based on the look of the door & rear quarter, it doesn't look good!

That could be a really nice car with a little body work done. But, like Metro said, get under it a bit and check out the rust situation under the car.

meet the person who is selling it, if they have owned it for very long, and look like the kind of person who you would let drive your own car, then buy it, if you would be scared to let them drive your car for fear of them trashing it, then don't buy it! with after market tail lights, boxes of body kit, and after market springs it sounds like it was going to be turned in to a ricer, the tank of gas might be the most valuable part, if you want to make sure then ask them for how many tanks they got 35mpg, and under what conditions.

For $900, just about any running CRX is a good value! I live in the Land of Perpetual Teenagers' Dream Cars, so every CRX around has been molested with cheap body kits, poorly-done engine swaps, and enormous wheels.

Anyway, like everyone else has said, if no rust, it's a must. The CRX has aero qualities similar to the Insight, so it has loads of potential.

I talked to the seller on the phone today.

I am going to take a look at it on Saturday.

The seller also has a "body kit" which I guess is front and rear bumpers, and something for the sides.

He also has "S1" fenders and lowering springs, which he wasn't sure what the lowering is off hand, but thought they were about a 2 inch drop.

He said the only thing on the car that wasn't standard was the aftermarket tail lights. Everything else is stock.

If those fenders and other parts are LIGHTER than the original parts, I guess I would be interested. I would like to do whatever I can to make this car a FE winner. Low ride springs sound like fun too!

What do I look for in these aftermarket parts? Buy the fenders if they are lighter, but not if they are some crazy non-aerodynamic thing?

I still need to see in person how the underbelly looks.

I am pretty sure I can convince my wife that I can buy another car if I then immediately sell the Dodge.

I think you might need the fenders if the rust is bad enough, by the looks of it in the picture there is rust at the lower part behind the front wheels (where I'm assuming the fenders go). The body kit itself will most likely be some obnoxious looking thing that would cost a bunch to get painted and fitted so probably not the best money spent on his part. :(

But by the looks of the cheap taillights (not calling them cheap because they are Altezzas but because they looks like they are fogging up from not being sealed properly), the springs and fenders are probably no-name ebay items. Nothing against ebay but, some of those cheap springs sold on there ($40 shipped link below) have horrible ride quality and end up blowing the suspension ending up costing more in the long run. I would buy them if they are branded (H&R, Dropzone, Tein, Skunk2) because they would make a nice aero mod for the vehicle.

Either way, if there is minimal fixable rust and the car is in working condition, buy it but I would try to negotiate on lowering the price just to see if it pays off. It would make a nice eco-vehicle I would buy springs if branded and fenders if needed due to rust. :D

Another thing, I would ask if he still has the stock taillights.

I wish I hadn't lowered my vx, lowered springs tend to be stiffer due to their reduced travel, so the ride is pretty harsh and I have name brand ones that were supposed to be softer, I also hit the nose of the car alot coming out of parking lots and this is with 1.5 lower then stock, that harsher ride is also going to be harder on an already weakened body, and I didn't notice any improvement in mileage by lowering my car.
