Cut my car in half?

Hi everyone, I've got a crazy idea that I wanted to float to see if it had been done before or if there is any feasibility to it. I have a 94 Mazda 626 that I use to commute 70 miles rt per day. I've been toying with the idea of doing an EV convert but I'm limited by the speed/range trade off. So I thought of something a bit more radical - cut it in half. Convert it to a two seat tandem, replace some of the metal body components with composites and do some other aero mods. Since I'm the only one that rides in it seems very wasteful to push a ton and a half down the road everyday. Besides, I think it would look kinda cool. My theory (hope) is that with the reduced weight and frontal area I'd be able to pull off the EV convert. I don't know what the DMV and insurance folks would say. Do I need to have my head examined? My wife thinks so.

Thanks.

Would be pretty sick if you could pull it off. Do you have all the fab equipment needed? If it was me, that and money would be the only things stopping me from doing it

Where's that picture of the aero-half-metro when you need it...

would be a cool conversion... i kind of like the beetle, would be cool to do that to a metro.

hard to fathom how that sort of mod would be street legal anywhere. it most certainly wouldn't be over here.

how about looking for a cheap (metro) convertible... with the roof in a bad condition for example might not have to much miles either as it's more of a fun car... the frame should already be strengthened so you'll just have to fair over the passenger seat, shorten the windshield and create teardrop roof. in fact you might do away with the windshield altogether and build something like the top of a record recumbent bike or small airbplane... a fiberglass dopshape with an aircraft style windshield.

while you're at that you could give the car a "nosejob" as wel ;)

you could even make it so that you can convert it back into a two or 4 seater when the need calls, with detachable panels or hatches, some sort of jeep style windhield that fold backwards to cover part of the pasenger compartment but giver the extra pasenger some sort of wind protection.

it all depends on how dedicated you are and it'd cost more than running a standard striped out metro of course.

Now take that last vid one step further, graft an older motorcycle into the back and there is your three wheeler... Be good for around town, not so sure about freeway...
