Daily gas mileage blab thread

So today I kicked butt. On the way up to NYC I get a solid 73.5 mpg. I was getting over 75 before the lincoln tunnel, but the traffic dragged me down.

Way home was a little bit worse at 66 mpg.

How's everyone else doing?

cfg83 05-07-2009 07:55 PM

SVOboy -

Warm LA temps got me to about 63+ MPG on the way to work at the 710 South/105 West interchange. But, I need at least 66 MPG at that point to even think of going for my "record", and I usually need a :turtle: to follow for that last stretch because it has some excruciatingly gentle uphills that manage to rob MPG.

Nary a :turtle: to be found, so I finished at about 59+ MPG.

SVOboy 05-07-2009 08:01 PM

Still looks pretty good compared to the 30 day,

robbiewt 05-07-2009 08:24 PM

I hit the road between thunder storms. But, it was the beginning of the afternoon rush hour. The drive was about 46 mostly highway miles with about 8 miles of stop-n-go. The SGII reported 46.9 mpg for this trip. And 44.1 mpg for the tank so far.

McTimson 05-07-2009 09:15 PM

I've only been getting 45-46 the last few days, after getting 49's last week when it was nice out. I feel like I'm doing something wrong, I hate it, haha.

Plus, I'm hearing some noise from my front driver's wheel, and after I blew the rear wheel bearing last weekend, I'm nervous that the fronts are on their way out as well.

SVOboy 05-07-2009 09:41 PM

Are there any mods in your future, tim?

McTimson 05-07-2009 10:04 PM

Absolutely - once I get some coroplast, a real grille block and rear wheel covers will be the first things to get made. I'd like to get some sort of cover for the back, when it rains, the middle of the back window has no water movement on it, so there's definitely separation back there.

I think doing a full tune up on it will be the first thing to get done, though. No point in getting 50MPG if it's going to fall apart in a month anyway.

robbiewt 05-07-2009 10:15 PM

On tonight's trip home, the SGII reported 50.2 mpg. Very little traffic = Yay!

mhmitszach 05-07-2009 10:52 PM

Last Sunday, in the nice 75 degree weather, my 30 mile trip came out to 46.5 mpg on the scanguage. I'm pretty sure that's the best trip that it's ever read off and to think, it's not even summer yet!

The TPS is getting closer and closer to staying right at 21, which is between 45-50 mpg at 55 mph (my goal).

trebuchet03 05-08-2009 12:01 AM

I've been pulling some solid 40's off the SG in midrange trips through suburbia - you know, where the speed limit is kinda technically super efficient highway speeds with limited traffic lights/stops :p

The heat is on in Central Florida, so a/c is dragging things down now.

I just did an oil change @ ~12,000 miles. A little longer than I usually do (~10K miles) but I'll be getting oil sample analysis to tell me if I did wrong :) Maybe that will bump me up slightly.

I'd be keeping up with my gaslog, but my refueling methods/schedule makes it a little too tedious for me :/

Daox 05-08-2009 08:22 AM

Ooooh I'll be able to post here as soon as my mpguino is calibrated... that'll be about a month probably, ack.

cfg83 05-09-2009 02:47 AM

Hello -

54.4 MPG on the way home from work tonight. I was within striking range of my 57.3 max when I hit a slow-down at the 710-North to 10-East transition. At that point I lost at least 2 MPG. I don't think I would have broke my record for this route, but I would have been close.

tasdrouille 05-09-2009 06:26 AM

I was practically alone to and from work yesterday, had plenty of time to time my lights perfectly. I rode my bicycle, it was great.

trikkonceptz 05-09-2009 09:40 AM

I must admit everyday this new car continues to surprise me and increase in FE. This morning I hit a new one way commute high of 45.7mpg avg. Considering I have done nothing to this vehicle yet, I am still waiting for it to max out before I begin modding to see the true impact of the mods.

Overall though, I can't complain. I'm creeping up on the 60 day mark and already have near 6000 miles on it .. switching to synthetic oil this week.

philip1 05-10-2009 09:57 AM

Drove from Charlotte NC to an IDPA match in SC and back yesterday and managed 37.1 with the A/C on and driving 70-75mph (temp stayed good too)

NeilBlanchard 05-10-2009 02:59 PM

FIVE out the past nine tanks have been over 500 miles!

SVOboy 05-13-2009 01:54 PM

Really wanted 60 mph on the way home from the DMV so I used aggressive P&G with EOC (no traffic) to get 61.07 mpg over the 2.4 mile trip. :D

cfg83 05-13-2009 03:41 PM

Hello -

The radio told me about a crash on the 710 South, so I took my backup route :

Code:

10 East at Rosemead -> 605 South -> 105 West -> 405 South -> Off Freeway

53.7 MPG
42  MPH Average
61  MPH Max
0.7  Hours
2831 RPM Max
32.8 Miles
207  Water Temp Max
0.6  Gallons

The 42 MPH Average is misleading. I hit sub-10 MPH traffic jams on the 605 South. Normally the Semis take the 710 South, but it looks like a lot of them took the 605 South to avoid the accident. In general I hate the 605 because people drive too fast and it seems like I almost always hit a jam. Today was no exception.

CarloSW2

cfg83 06-04-2009 05:37 PM

Hello -

I took an alternate route to work today. Normally I avoid the 605 because the average speed is too fast (i.e. accident prone), which leads to lots of traffic jams. But, sigalert.com told me the way was clear so I rolled the dice :

Code:

ROUTE :
210 East -> 605 South -> 105 West -> 405 South -> Exit Freeway
=> Roughly 38+ miles
----
NET ELEVATION CHANGE : ~434 feet drop
----
SCANGAUGE "CURRENT" READINGS :
59.6 MPG,
0.7 Gallons,
204 Water Temp Max,
38.3 Miles,
2504 RPM Max,
0.7 Hours,
63 MPH Max,
49 MPH AVG
----
IAT READING : Hot Air Intake + dynamic grill block v3.0 led to
Input Air Temp readings of around 120+ degrees F.
----
WEATHER(.com) :
65 degrees F,
Cloudy,
64.5% Humidity,
52.5 degrees F Dew Point,
30.0 in. Pressure,
----
TIME : ~10:00 AM to ~10:42 PM (PST), ~42 minutes

I lost maybe 1-2 MPG at a 605-South traffic jam caused by a Caltrans far-left lane closure, but not enough to ruin the run. 59 MPG is a pretty good number. This implies that I could have a record run under goldilox weather/traffic conditions.

CarloSW2

McTimson 06-04-2009 08:53 PM

Where do you get your elevation change from, a GPS unit?

Those are some pretty good numbers. It's cool to think that you can go 38 miles with .7 gallons of gas - I mean, think of how far the average person could go with .7 gallons of gas, maybe like 20 miles or so.

I've been having to drive pretty long (100-120 mile) trips down route 17 in NY for the last week, so I've been learning the route more. At first, I was getting about ~44MPG, and then I had to rush back one day, so it was only 41-42, but the last trip, I got 47 going down and back up, so I'm pretty happy with that.

Yeah, I did a GPS check when I first did the run. Hrmmmm, now that I think of it, the 210 feet is for my other home to work route. I'll bet this route is more than 210 feet. I will have to double-check that number on Friday.

This is my "milk run" MPG, the route that makes up for all my other city-putzing MPG and bad-traffic MPG.

CarloSW2

cfg83 06-05-2009 03:36 PM

McTimson -

I just checked, and this route has a 434 foot drop, not the 210 I originally cited. Soooooo, on a goldilox day, I am almost positive I would get a "record" MPG.

But, I took it again today and I was reminded of why I hate this route. Lot's of tailgaters pushing me to drive too fast. Everybody follows the 0.25 second rule instead of the 3 second rule. I had to sit by a trucker with a cellphone to his ear. Arghhhhhhh  !!!!

KJSatz 06-08-2009 06:22 PM

Last tank I got 49.0 mpg. I wish I'd filled up right after I got in town after the trip instead of driving around for 15 miles of city driving...it might have squeaked to 50 mpg. This was with a full load of cargo aboard. I'll have some highway trips during the summer without load that should be very very good, but there will also be a lot of city driving in the tanks, usually with 1-4 passengers, which makes for worse FE (though better than if they were in another car).

62.1 MPG from Home to Work

65.2 MPG from Home to Work

Hello -

I have the dubious distinction of getting my record on an even bigger wildfire day, :( :

Trip: home to work
Quote:

HYPOTHESIS : Fire weather. Sad to say, but fires mean high MPG. What is really scary is that the traffic wasn't goldilox. I hit some traffic jams on the 105 West that normally would have killed a good run. However, I had such great MPG leading into the traffic jam that I still beat my old record by 1.9 MPG.

17,07 in the Mustang. Thanks to good weather, this is the first time in 26 days I've filled up the Stang!

SentraSE-R 08-28-2009 10:53 PM

At the end of June, I started out on a cross-country trip in my Scion xB. There were four memorable legs on that trip.

First was a 75 mpg downhill run from Truckee, CA to Reno, NV, involving a 2000' elevation drop, over a 40 mile distance. At the 35 mile mark, I was still averaging 80 mpg!

Second was a 58 mpg downhill run from a summit to Ely, NV, again over a 40 mile distance.

Third was a 165 mile drive from Gallup, NM to Tuba City, AZ involving no net elevation change. It was a perfect day on a perfect road, climbing mesas that offered long 5+ mile runouts, with no traffic, allowing me to slow down to 35 mph and drag my glides out longer. I averaged 59 mpg for that 165 miles! That's 211% of my 28 mpg EPA combined mileage for 165 miles.

Fourth was my whole drive home from Gallup to the Bay Area. I averaged 51.5 mpg for 1213 miles - 184% of EPA. for over 1200 miles.

My worst mileage was 32 mpg driving at 70 mph to meet some friends. In spite of that, and despite hauling four people and all our gear up and down the length of Florida with cruise control and AC running, I averaged 44.7 mpg for 7238 miles.in the Scion.

SentraSE-R 08-28-2009 11:16 PM

My most recent tank fill-up for my Nissan SE-R averaged 45.3 mpg over 410 miles, which works out to 205.9% of EPA for that vehicle. Its previous tank was even better, at 46.8, 213.7% of EPA.

Kind of what I was thinking. I always hid behind the excuse that my SVT Focus wasn't going to be a hypermiling car, as it was tuned too aggressively...but to get that kind of mileage out of an SE-R blows that excuse out of the water. Though, out of a "normal" Focus, I would have been getting well over 30mpg instead of the 28mpg I ended up getting.

SentraSE-R 08-29-2009 12:18 PM

You just have to drive like you're a little old lady ;). I'll be taking the spoiler off next week, as it's the only reason I can think of to explain why my SE-R's mileage drops like a stone at higher speeds compared to my wife's '06 Hyundai Elantra. Their final gearing, Cd, weight, and frontal area are similar. The Cd probably came from some Nissan PR handout, so it's the most likely suspect.

RandomFact314 08-29-2009 12:58 PM

*ugh* how I long to get MPGs in the 60s...... :(

I did! On the highway, a constant 60 would rip a consistent 35+mpg with no effort whatsoever, so it was good there...but in town if I drove like a "normal" person, that is, keeping up with traffic from the light and such, it got its EPA city estimate of ~21ishmpg. I fought for every one of the 7mpg I added on to that, though with keeping speed down to 40 rather than 50 I may have been able to see 30mpg at least.

Just got 51,41mpg on my bike :)

RobertSmalls 09-22-2009 08:48 AM

Oh, here's the DGMBT. Well, let me blab: broke my commute MPG record for the second time in a week. 33.8mpg! That's +1mpg vs the previous record. I credit the rain, and traffic, which consipired to force me to drive slower. Dare I go the speed limit and shoot for 35mph? Not in traffic, but if I go to work in the wee hours of the morning, I'll try it.

Luxbg 09-23-2009 02:34 PM

I did a little road trip to New York this past weekend from Baltimore and was quite happy with the results! On the way up, going the speed limit(65), I managed 39.4 mpg, I was shooting for 40, but hey, never achieved that kind of number before on such a long trip.

On the way back I got stuck in Soho traffic for about 90 minutes (I was following my GPS and realized too late where it was sending me!) After that I didn't feel like eco-driving anymore, so I was doing 80/85 most of the way home (which was actually going with the flow traffic!!). Surprisingly I still stayed above EPA at 32.4 mpg (Highway EPA for my car is 30 mpg).

Despite the not so great return trip, I managed to do the trip on one tank which was my initial goal, so I'm quite happy, and after filling up, my average for the tank came too 36.5 mpg.

Mustang Dave 09-23-2009 10:33 PM

I filled up my Mustang this morning and set a new commuting record of 31.89 MPG. That's only .07 MPG less than my best ever road trip MPG of 31.96. I'll hit 32 one of these days...
This was accomplished with:
Tires @ 32 PSI, filled with a natural 78% Nitrogen blend (from my air compressor);)
No P&G
No EOC
No DWL
No drafting
No gadgets
No gimmicks
No "snake oil" additives

Luxbg 09-24-2009 12:39 AM

Congrats Dave! Those are some amazing numbers considering your engine and limited use of techniques/mods.
