Diesel eco mod intake idea?
 

Would applying a restrictor plate in the intake tract of a turbo diesel improve fe or have any benefit?

What's yer premise for that? :confused:

Depending on the vehicle you may see a reduction in power and possibly more smoke, but I doubt it would affect FE positively.

Diesels modulate based on fuel not air volume. They don't have or require a throttle plate.

My thinking was that it injects fuel based on the amount of air based on the map sensor reading and restricting flow will alter this. But if it just injects fuel regardless of air flow then it would be a waste. I do know if I fool it to think that it is getting a lower map value it injects less fuel and higher map value it injects more fuel..........Just an idea..........:confused:

Most diesels that I know of do not have a map sensor, the intake is just open, also in engines the so called "restrictions" are not that, unless you don't believe in math, not to say you should believe in math, it's full of theory's, just like evolution is.
The fluid dynamics of pulses of air react differently with different speeds and frequency, length and size of intake and exhaust affect this, but when you add a turbo in to the intake it's less so on both ends because of how the turbo soaks up the pulses.
your question however was on fuel usage, your throttle connect to your injector pump, or on a common rail diesel, to your injectors with a connection to the waste gate on the turbo to give the engine more air when the amount of fuel being injected gets high enough.

If the engine has an ECU with a map, you may be able to get a remap to use less fuel, but you get less torque as well. If its a mechanical pump you can modify the pressure. A popular mod with Pug 306s TDs in the UK is to give the fuel regulator screw a turn in the right direction until you get smoke and then back a bit to get more power. You may be able to go the other way to use less fuel. The lean-ness of the mixture doesn't matter too much I don't think (ready to be corrected on that though).

I'm not convinced of the airflow effect on TDs. A popular mod with my car is to get the intake from a 150hp version (mine is 130) and fit that to get more power but I don't think there is a lot of credible evidence of the benefits unless you mod the rest of the engine too.

If you want the best economy then go for the smallest TD engine. There is a new Volvo V70 (which is not a small car) with a 1.6 litre Diesel available here. Does 177 lb/ft of torque and 870 miles on a tank.

I think you want to have the least restrictive air flow in and exhaust out. Some of Bank's ideas for power enhancements allegedly will also give better fuel economy. There are other aftermarket stuff (as you know) that will sorta duplicate Bank's stuff. Also, does your programmer have the option of downloading an "economy" file? Any "restrictor plate" will probably reduce horsepower and reduce efficiency.

Take a look at MADS smarty with POD, power on demand. It will allow you to selectively detune throttle response to allow you to increase economy. It is the only tuner I have seen for the Dodge Cummins that lets you choose to have less horsepower when you don't need it to have increased fuel economy. The guys who use it says it is also great in ice and snow...easier to keep vehicle in control when tires dont want to slip at the twitch of your foot.

You know I'm a huge diesel fan and i can only think that this would hurt fuel economy and performance
