Diesel exhaust as cancerous as asbestos
 

....according the the World Health Organization. I know this has been mentioned in other threads, but I think a thread dedicated to this is a good idea.

Other articles I have found mention that 07+ engines with DPFs only slightly reduce the effects.

It kind of scares me because I work in the shop at a heavy duty truck dealership. We do have exhaust fans that slip over the exhaust stacks, but they are not 100% effective at removing all the exhaust from the building. Plus, there is a mentality that anything with a DPF is harmless, so the exhaust fans sometimes do not get used at all.

...and imagine what it's like for our military guys/gals who "live" in their diesel vehicles almost 24 hrous a day...for months on end.

I'm skeptical. Lung cancer incidence (people who develop lung cancer) is not tracked as deaths from lung cancer have been steadily decreasing since 1990. Overall deaths by cancer continue to decline even as the population continues to grow. The only cancers that have clear rising incidence rates are skin cancers, esophogeal cancers, liver cancers, and kidney cancers.

I'd be more inclined to believe that this is meant to add another plank of support to those that are opposed to the internal combustion engine.

Apperantly particles from the DPF are worse.

is it the C02 or the H20 which is causing cancer?

Probably because smoking has become taboo.

I don't think they need another plank. Most people realize that ICEs are pretty crappy. A 200 year old invention that is usually around 25% efficient under ideal conditions (that rarely happen). But it's all we really have right now.
