diesel mustang--how would you make one?

I'm thinking about making a 99 mustang a diesel? I'm not really sure if it's possible but I'm just brainstorming. So far I have heard that a diesel out of an old ranger would work but that's as far as I've gotten. I wonder what kind of motor mounts that would require and who would have them or would they need to custom made.

What kind of engine do you think would work best? I know a new VW engine would be awesome but I think the electronics would be a pain and it would require more additional parts in the drivetrain, i.e. transmission and driveshaft. Do I have any other options here?

You would need to figure out about the mount issue, but if the engine/transmission could physically fit, you could have custom mounts make and just swap over everything, shouldn't be toooo bad.

Are the engine bolt up points for the V6 and V8 the same? If they are, there may be factory options available, which will either cost a ton from an importer, or be an o.k. price if you don't mind going down to South America to track the right stuff down.

My ultimate dream diesel project is to put in a 7.3 Powerstroke in a mid-60s Lincoln Continental and then converting it to run on biodiesel or veggie oil. I think this idea would speak volumes to the concept of re-using/re-purposing old vehicles instead of discarding them in favor of newer cheaply-made vehicles.

Sorry about the random tangent. Anyway, back on topic: I second what SVOboy said about mounts and such. There's a guy on Turbobricks who transplanted a 1.9TDI into his Volvo 245. He said the biggest issues (both fabrication and cost-wise) were the mounts and tranny bellhousing adapter. Find thread here: http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=100369

Best of luck on your project!

Regards,
Bryant

Not sure where you live but some states in the US have laws against putting older engines in newer cars/trucks.

How compatible are Isuzu and Ford stuff? Cause the 3.2 turbo diesel out of a Rodeo tied to a 5spd would be a pretty sick 'stang

When you get right down to it, a custom conversion is just that custom. Unless there is a related engine or body that uses the same engine, forget about it, and just choose the engine and tranny set up you want for the vehicle. In order of difficulty;

-Fabricating solid engine mounts
-Making room in the transmission tunnel/ Fire wall, if need be
-Fabricating new tranmission mounts
-Having a custom drive shaft made to accept the tranny of one car and the rear end of another.

Hopefully you'll choose an engine with minimal electronics to make that part easy. So find yourself a good welder and a junk yard with lots of engines and happy hacking.

Isuzu is tied to GM. Try a diesel Camaro.

I would take a TDI jetta that had a beat up body and build your own mustang look alike body over it.
Other wise would a Ford truck engine fit?

Maybe a VW diesel but otherwise it will be tough. Fords are very resistant to engine swaps because of their tight engine compartments.

Much easier to do engine swaps on GM vehicles.
