DIY Active Rear Aero
 

So, after seeing the video and reading about the Merc. concept... I had an idea about a cable operated active aero treatment for the rear of the car. One of my biggest concerns with making my car LONGER was the hassle with parking and maneuvering in tight spaces.

Wouldn't it be possible to have a section mounted on rollers (like desk drawer hardware) that when pulled or pushed by a cable operated from inside the car could extend the rear by another foot or so?

What do you guys think?

As long as you can live with the loss of trunk space you'd be okay.You'd have to consider an exotic bulkhead which has torsional rigidity with the drawer in and out,as you'd be cutting away all triangulation.

It's a development that brings a smile to my face, and I'm sure aerohead's.

The concept would rely on very stiff, very light panels that have to meet very precisely over whatever it is, a 10" length? Rather than butt together as shown, if the gap scissored shut it would be better supported.

No trunk access so maybe open the doors like the Ford Evos:

OP -- What car are contemplating modding? Maybe extend the car 10" already instead of cutting into the existing body for the space?

An air cylinder with a reversing valve would work as long as there was an air supply. The whole assembly could be light enough to mount on a rear hatch to get access to a trunk. I see an application to bikes as well.

That's what my inspiration was.

So basically to achieve this, you'll need to be a metal fabricator or have access to an extremely strong yet light materials aka carbon fiber, mechanical engineer, aerodynamicist (is this a word?), and an electrical engineer (if you want to make it automated.)

PLUS a auto body expert if you want it to look halfway decent.

Given the talents shown on this forum I have no doubt this could be done. This is an intermediate level project that a competent technician or community college class could do.
