DIY Distilled water

Distilled water in japan is $50 for 18 liters, and I don't feel like paying that much. Does anyone have any suggestions on building a water distiller? It's for use in a humidifier, and radiator.

This company makes a counter top distiller for less than $200 that makes 4 gallons per day. They make them with different voltages for Europe and South America, so they probably make a unit that will work in Japan. They ship worldwide.

Probably easier than trying to build one yourself.

Here's a video by a guy who built his own for less than $100 with a pressure cooker, small radiator and a fan.

Wicked clever!

I've seen lots of plans online for solar powered distillers. Pretty easy to build too.

The easystill looks to be $295

lol a added benefit is that you can also distill alcohol in a still.
i dont like that homemade link you posted. really? a old transmission filter? yuck.
making a distiller is easy. its basically like the one homemade one, but better?

get a pot and drill a hole in the lid. then figure a way to hook up some flexible copper pipe. and that should do it. cook the water and have a catch pot under the othersside of the pipe.

I found a simple one using a pot, a little bowl, saran wrap and a rock. I will try it out this week and see what happens. I prefer the slow and cheap method.

Ok i am going to sound like a doofus here ( well it is my name after all)

what benifit is there to this?
Is it really for getting the "CRAP" out of water to make it drinkable?
or are there other reasons to do this?

I am asking because we have been collecting the Condensed water out of our AC system at our house to water plants and such outside.
but we are collecting more water than we are using. so i am wondering what other uses there could be for it...

Thanks
Steve

Its not to make it drinkable. Its so that when you run the water in the humidifier, it doens't leave deposits in the machine and eventually ruin something. Same with the radiator.

Memorytwo 09-29-2008 10:58 PM

you can drink distilled water, ive been drinking it for a while now.
but there arent any benefits from drinking distilled water.
and i wouldnt drink from condensation from an ac condenser. thats not distillation.

distilling water removes any impurities. ideally you use distilled water in things like coffee pots, car cooling system, and similar to avoid lime buildup. it is also used alot in science experiments so the water is pure and will not taint the tests.

Ahh - ok thanks for the clarification.
The AC water was only for the plants outside ( Georgia has No Water AND No Gas)
strike that - the water is manageable - we have gotten rain this year but sill have watering restructions - so the AC water goes to the garden.
