Exclamation '04 Volvo S40 T5

Hi I've recently purchased a volvo S40 T5 and I would like to know if there are any easy DIY mods that I will be able to do to make my car greener but not decrease in performance.

Increase tyre pressure to 43.5 psi (3 bar) .
Gradually go to sidewall max. pressure if you and the car can handle it - the ride gets a bit harsh, and bouncy on the rear of the V50 when I go beyond sidewall max.

Especially if you use 17" rims, many owners in Europe feel handling improves when going up to 41 psi on this platform.
It's why I started increasing the pressure in the first place. Volvo specs are simply too low.
If you see more shoulder wear on the tyres, increase pressure.

Drive slower.
Going 65 rather than 75 will seriously decrease fuel consumption.

Block the upper grille - from the inside if you'd rather keep the looks of the car.
Test it first with something that's easily removed.

If you do a lot of motorway miles, aerodynamic rims will help a bit - I use the heavy Volvo Libra wheels.
Many on here use pizza-pans to smooth their wheels.
Use lighter weight wheels if you do more city traffic - Cordelia 16" are Volvo's lightest rims that will fit the T5.
But it's not cost-efficient to buy new rims for the purpose.
I got a set of Libra wheels and fitted the Cordelia rims with winter tyres.

Switch to the lightest weight engine and transmission oil allowed for it when these need replacing.

Change to lower rolling resistance tyres when the time comes to replace them.

Read through the 65+ Efficiency Mods and 100+ Hypermiling Tips , links are near the top of the page.
Start practicing as many as you see feasible.
Read over the list occasionally and add more tricks as you grow into new habits.

Start coasting if the transmission will allow you.

My fuel consumption is down by some 24% by
- driving slower
- different driving techniques
- coasting in neutral with engine on
- low rolling resistance (LRR) tyres
- lightweight engine and transmission oil
- more aerodynamic wheels
- some weight reduction

Thanks for the tips! I think I will try out changing the tire pressure to 43 psi, seems like it is the easiest one to start with. I just hope that the people that ride in my car don't complain!
