Do you like the iPhone 10's notch?

1 Attachment(s)
Apparently the tenth iPhone came out almost a year ago and came with bat ears:

https://ecomodder.com/forum/attachme...1&d=1538112463

Apple obsessed over maximizing the screen, but instead of moving the selfish camera to the bottom, next to the home button, they increased the screen on the top left and top right and also got rid of the home button.*

I first heard about this last week, did not care enough to investigate, and eventually happened across an explanation.

If you know Linus of Linus Tech Tips, he said this of the notch: (Starting at 2:33)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdFXddVsUuQ

So, it is fine if you only want to see 1 - 4 notifications, but do not mind having part of one side of your movie cut out.

*Instead of having a home button, you swipe up from the bottom, just like with my $35 RCA tablet that is absolute garbage.

Ha. My last iPhone was an iPhone 3 I had in 2012.
And I'm pretty sure that one will be my first and last iphone.

freebeard 09-28-2018 11:54 AM

I've still got the Nokia candybar. I threw it in a drawer when they stopped rolling over prepaid minutes at the end of the year. :(

I'm surrounded by a humanity that took the bait and is now loosening it's ever-loving Mind.

oil pan 4 09-28-2018 02:01 PM

Now the pictures are working.
Yeah that's dumb.
Did people actually stand in long lines for that?

redpoint5 09-28-2018 06:37 PM

Not a fan of iPhones period, and I've had the 3,4,5, and now 6s.

I'd rather see an entire image than have an incomplete but larger one. If I needed a bigger screen, I could simply hold the phone closer to my face.

Someone do the math on this. The extra 1/8" screen means you can hold the phone, what, an extra half inch further away to get the same perceived screen size? I have a feeling the Pythagorean theorem comes into play here.

Simplification is great for simple people. I happen to find buttons useful though. Beyond that, I like to send files via wifi or bluetooth sometimes. Heck, can't even send files via USB if they aren't photos. I've disliked Apple products since the Mac Classic II. Drag a floppy disk icon to trash to eject it? The iPod was terrible.

If the iPhone 10 doesn't have a home button, how does it do fingerprint recognition? BTW, why did they skip the iPhone 9?

Xist 09-28-2018 10:34 PM

I do not even know how big the iEx screen is. How big is the notch? People also love the 18:9 ratio, which gives them a taller screen, without making their phone wider. So, that is catching on, and so is the notch. Here are twenty Android phones with that abomination, although I believe that all of them are smaller. Two phones have "Teardrops" that only hide the selfish camera. Some even have a 19:9 display: https://www.smartprix.com/bytes/8-be...display-notch/

Where will it end?! Probably no more than halfway to the predicted i5:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNBP18nrRdw

Apple tried to integrate the fingerprint scanner into the screen, but could not make it work. There are phones with fingerprint sensors on the back, but many people like to have their phones flat on a desk or table, which does not work with face recognition, either, which was what Apple tried. However, that technology did not work any better than the screen-based fingerprint scanner did, so Apple was not able to sell as many phones as they wanted. https://www.fastcompany.com/40508767...-have-a-future

Android companies have since figured out how to make a fingerprint scanner work in the screen and one of those notch phones listed at SmartPrix has it.

One of those webpages said that the the 8 was only a 7s, so arguably they skipped the 7 and 8. Is this the same marketing gimmick as Win10? No.*

*This page says that they skipped nine because 10, which came out four years ago, is supposed to be the last one, but it will be updated indefinitely: https://www.lifewire.com/what-happen...dows-9-2626259

There are more suggestions here: https://www.extremetech.com/computin...-not-windows-9

jcp123 09-28-2018 11:06 PM

I'm so conflicted. The notch isn't any issue for me. But I've been an apple fan for over a decade, including iPhones.

The direction they're going, though, makes me wanna go android. Deleting headphone jacks? Cmon, man. And iOS has had a cheaper visual texture with every iteration. I've never been a google guy - I've used Yahoo! since before google was a gleam in anyone's eye, but at this point it's one or another, and Apple is earning a protest vote against itself.

Sounds like 'excess' to me. I forgot which Youtube video was on about how the patriarchy is keeping down people with small hands.

I've been with Apple since before 1984, but I'd never associate to a smart phone. I'm mentally unstable enough as it is, I don't need the anxiety and grief.

Got you way beat :-) My first and last Apple product was a 4-color plotter I bought back in the mid-80s. Let's just say that while it worked, it wasn't all that great, and everything Apple has produced since seems to have gone downhill...

Your online alter-ego fakes mental stability pretty well, despite a penchant for domes and dome shaped vehicles.

Apple did it, now everyone is doing it.

My new spyware-infested Communist-indoctrinating Huawei Nova 3i has a notch, which only lights up to show notifications.

No home button, either. Everything is software... which is <sarcasm>*terrific*</sarcasm> when a program starts misbehavin'.

Can't complain much. Got my phone at a sixth of the price of a new iPhone, and it's ten times as good as my last smartphone.

I’ve always believed phones need a battery disconnect device

Xist 10-01-2018 06:20 AM

If I could pop out my battery I would have replaced it a year or two ago.

redpoint5 10-01-2018 11:23 AM

Should have made the poll not anonymous so I can despise the 1 person that likes the notch :p

I've repaired hundreds of cellphones in my time. I'm sure you can find a youtube video showing how to remove an S6 battery.

Highlight, right-click, and Google showed me this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfV4CK6KIek

Now, where can I find a quality S6 battery?

Same process: https://www.amazon.com/JUBOTY-Li-Pol...2%3A2491149011

$16 and rated 4.4/5 on Amazon with free shipping. Prime delivery in a week.

See, that's what you get for buying Apple. The battery on my phone pops right out. It also has real buttons and a physical keyboard, and cost me a LOT less than an iPhone.

Since I prefer putting quality Chinese components into my stuff and not cheap ones, I tracked down replacement batteries by Samsung.

They do not sell them anymore.

I found one on Amazon. It was $60 with zero reviews. I found other ones on Amazon that were allegedly new, but they only charged $7, and they were rated 2.5/5, with 93 reviews.

Most of those said that their battery was used.

TVserviceParts.com will sell me one for the same price.

Well, let's see how the $16 one is!

One thing that I take for granted doing my own car repairs is an exploded diagram. I searched for one and found Ifixit's teardown. They rated the S6 4/10 for ease of repair. There are fifteen steps to replace the battery and they charge $25 for one, with a one-year warranty. The one on Amazon has a twenty-four-month warranty, but which company honors warranties better?

I do not have any idea.

Ifixit shows an additional twenty-one steps to replace the daughterboard.

This site analyzed 1,590 reviews for thirty products and said 93% of the products passed and 7% raised warnings.

Uh. Okay.

Does everyone admit they use adblock? I never read those messages!

I have morals! I am not allowing their ads if they block everyone else's!

That is how morals work, right? :)

The Ifixit kit is twice as expensive as the the one on Amazon and so is the daughterboard with the charging port, plus $8.75 shipping.

T-Mobile $14.59 4.8/5, 14 reviews:
https://ecomodder.com/forum/attachme...1&d=1538424774

Sprint $11 4.2/5 99 reviews:
https://ecomodder.com/forum/attachme...1&d=1538424774

Verizon $14.59 3.5/5 30 reviews:
https://ecomodder.com/forum/attachme...1&d=1538424774

I started cropping the pictures, but I seriously need a nap before facing my afternoon clients! I did schoolwork until 0530!

The only difference that I can tell between the pictures is the stamp on the cable and just below it. If there isn't a significant difference between the parts, why do the reviews vary so much?

Should I pay twice as much (plus shipping) for Ifixit parts?

freebeard 10-01-2018 05:06 PM

I was watching Joe Rogan talk to other comedians about murder, when he pulled out his new Samsung with a stylus so you can write notes on the lock screen and declared he's over his iPhone.

A stylus that pops out the bottom, instead of the top like my Apple Newton in 1993. (gotten through the developer program on release. I read Edgar Rice Burroughs novels on the city bus 'back in the day')

Apple lost it's soul. You know when.

Xist 10-01-2018 06:03 PM

I have a Samsung and soon, two Samsungs! However, Samsung copied Apple's repair-resistant design in this case. You could pop out the battery with the Galaxy S5.

I feel like I wasted my time learning PalmPilot Graffiti (single stroke handwriting recognition).

The last PDA I owned was some sort of Dell Axim. It seemed super neat at the time since it had a Windows Mobile OS, WiFi, and could play videos, browse the web, and play mp3s.

Funny how technology goes in cycles.

Most phones are going to less ease of serviceability, likely because they can make it a smaller form factor that way, and more people are demanding water resistance / waterproofing. I think that's why Apple dropped the 2.5mm stereo jack (and to sell their $150 bluetooth earbuds).

According to one source I just found, cell phones have an average operational life of 21 months, so they are basically disposable items these days.

Xist 10-02-2018 12:08 AM

People replace cell phones every year when the new model comes out, but it sounds like there are fewer and fewer new options.

The articles that I read about Back Market said that iPhone sales plateaued, although prices are up, so I guess that revenue is still up. I also kept reading that the refurbished business was growing quickly and they kept mentioning the increased price of phones.

"Research into how the world’s population revealed that between Android and iOS, around 18 per cent of women and 17 per cent of men used Apple’s system."
"Women were more likely than men to download photo, networking and messaging apps, sports and business apps had a higher probability of being downloaded by men."
"Women are also marginally more likely than women to own iPads, with the ratio of iPad ownership compared to an Android-running tablet at 1:4 compared to 1:6."
Great article!

niky 10-02-2018 12:49 AM

After the troubles I've had with half a dozen Sammies, I'm over them.

I've had two Chinese phones so far, and the only reason I ever had to replace the first (A Xiaomi Mi3) is on the hundredth time I dropped it, I managed to crack the casing by dropping it edge on on the edge of a concrete slab. It still works, but the casing flexes, meaning the screen is now vulnerable to cracks.

Still thinking about repairing it. Even if it is outdated. It was the best phone I've ever had.

Xist 10-02-2018 01:05 AM

I have only had two smartphones, both Samsungs, and I do not have any complaints--except for those good-for-nothing anklebiters on my lawn!

I have an iPad courtesy of work, but it is confiscated by my wife and kids. So though the initial beneficiary is me, the usage profile is predominantly female :)
Which amounts to hours of Wordfeuding :/

Xist 10-03-2018 06:56 AM

I too have an iPad courtesy of work, but do not have a wife and kids to confiscate it. They would be welcome to as long as it was charged it and didn't fight when I needed to take it to work.

My family is my mother and brother, but they never use my iPad.

Each of them has their own.

My brother uses his to say things like "I want Domino's pizza salami mushrooms cheese."

Verbally he only says "I wa [something that does not sound anything like pizza." The state provided it.

Mom uses hers to look up celebrities. She inherited it when Dad passed away.

My field is almost exclusively female, so the vast majority if iPads they provide are for women.

I still read Boing Boing every day for the technical stuff, but, boy, are they political:

boingboing.net:Trump malware to infect every US phone on Wednesday

I sat by my land-line phone but nothing happened. :(

redpoint5 10-03-2018 02:53 PM

LOL. If they are a tech publication, they had better know the difference between malware and an alert.

I got the alert about 30 min ago. Thought nukes were inbound, but alas, just a normal boring day in front of my computer.

freebeard 10-03-2018 03:44 PM

My son didn't get the message. Was there any content?

Boing Boing is four people. Cory Doctorow co-founded the EFF, but Mark Fraunfelder has gone deep into the weeds over the years.

My understanding is that it wasn't about the content, they just want to see what impedes the propagation.

I don't either. Happened when they raised the price of the land line to about $32/month, and I discovered a cheap cell phone would run me about $7/month.

Now if I could get one of those bumper stickers....
