Duel- Fuel system installed CNG and diesel 70% 30% split

I thought I would put this out there to show what we have been working on this summer. We have gone from 16 MPG on diesel to 32 MPG on diesel using CNG blend. We added 60 more HP on the top end .
Here is a YouTube of it being dynoed .

We now are installing the same system on one of my VW TDI Jetta,s.
At my site I can not add links sorry DRVOLKS . com

DR. Volks our new Duel- Fuel system installed and dynoed on a 2007 Ford F350 Power stroke.
We have adjusted it to have 70% 30% split on CNG and diesel and have great power for towing too. We have matched the power curve to be the same as the stock Diesel engine . As you can see there is no Black Smoke out the tail pipe on a hard pull.

I have seen one of these systems in action and they work very well.

They are also starting to use these with locomotives as well, using a ginormous 10,000 gallon liquid natural gas fuel car. They are going as high as 90% natural gas/10% diesel.

CN tests natural gas/diesel fuel powered locomotives

The [two] retrofitted locomotives, using 90 per cent natural gas, with 10 per cent diesel fuel for ignition, are paired with a natural gas fuel tender, or specially equipped and protected tank car, between them.

Is it serious about those locomotives? That would be such an improvement and finally going somewhere wise.

With these new computer controlled Duel Fuel systems it lets you control the IQ of the diesel on the fly all from the CNG controller.
It comes down to what you pay for CNG a gallon . Here in Boston at the street pumps its $2.69 for CNG ( I home fuel at $1.00 a GGE ) and diesel is $3.70 if you use a lot of diesel it works here.
But in the USA it can be as low as $1.25 for CNG at the pump so that makes it a no brainier.

Did the F350 see any MPG gains?

CNGVW 11-19-2014 08:19 AM

Hello It did we pushed the MPG on diesel from 16 MPG to 32 MPG using the CNG added fuel. We had been keeping very good records on fill up and all was used the same fueling stations. The point of the test is to see if we could cut our cost of fuel per mile in half.
We did do that and not loss any power. We did gain more power then stock on CNG.

For towing this kind of system was great we had the best of both worlds. We could simple swap a file in the CNG controller to make it in to a towing power house .
With the CNG blend it had 400 ft pounds of torque at 2600 RPM at a 70% 30% at the rear wheels. with no black smoke under load.

Oh ok, your OP didn't specify with vehicle you guys got from 16-32 so that's why I asked haha. That really is awesome though. I can't wait to see the results on a good mpg car like the Jetta, please do give us updates!

Thank you for the kind words. I have a handful of systems coming in the next few days for resale and testing. should have my TDI loaner converted to the Duel Fuel system in a few weeks.

At my site I do show my old system on a Jetta we did push the MPH on diesel to 120 MPG with CNG added my YouTube has like 30,000 views on it.

I see dedicated CNG Class 8 tractors regularly now (big fleets; daycabs) and have talked with a few owner/operators with dual-fuel capability on oilfield trucks in TX and OK. I can get CNG cheaply here (city bus terminal) but am more than "impressed" by cost of tankage and likely range.

Look forward to more.

I help manage the service department in what we shall call an undisclosed Paccar branded truck dealership. Wow...that narrows it down....

Anyway, we are a dealership for Westport GX 15L engines, as they are factory installed in our trucks. These engines are quite interesting, but unfortunately they quit production a few months ago. Westport is the research company that does much of the R&D for Cummins' natural gas engines, and they also developed their own system to run natural gas and diesel through a single injector per cylinder (direct injection) in a Cummins ISX 15L engine. They run on 95% natural gas/5% diesel. The diesel portion of the injector is the "spark plug" to initiate combustion (no actual spark plugs), and the natural gas portion of the injector provides the fuel volume for power delivery. They will not run on natural gas alone, so each truck has liquid natural gas tanks (120 gallons per side, vacuum insulated to hold -260F LNG), a small diesel tank and a DEF tank (urea for SCR catalyst/aftertreatment).

Westport's success vs spark plug ignited (normal) natural gas engines is that they are large (15L) and keep the high diesel compression ratio to maintain efficiency and diesel-like torque numbers - 485 HP and 1650 ft/lb.
