EcoModder Garage Stats

Not sure where or in what capacity I will integrate this, but I wanted to share with you while it was in the making: http://ecomodder.com/forum/garagestats.php

Any requests for stats? Should be able to fill any desire, big or little, so hit me.

:thumbup::turtle:

Request to do list:
- I like stats for anything, so total number of gasoline cars, diesel, electric, and total amounts saved by each would be cool too. -mctimson
- Less decimal places!!! - piwoslaw
- ticking fuel savings counter - cfg83
- mpg per pound - everyone
- How about dividing up the mpg figures into percentiles to give an idea of the range of mpg figures. - orange4boy
- a cloud of ecomodders on a graph with vehicle weight and mpg graphed. - orange4boy
- put a dollar figure on the savings - robbiewt
- distribution of avg / %over EPA - groar
- avg / %over EPA per month & seasons - groar
- avg / %over EPA for last 3, 6 & 12 months - groar
- Jan, Feb, Mar, would probably be best if it's possible to change that. - piwoslaw

McTimson 07-27-2009 10:29 PM

Total gallons saved would be neat. I like stats for anything, so total number of gasoline cars, diesel, electric, and total amounts saved by each would be cool too.

SVOboy 07-27-2009 10:30 PM

I just added total amount of gallons saved.

igo 07-27-2009 11:01 PM

Cool Stuff svo.

average distance per tank might be nice.

SVOboy 07-27-2009 11:08 PM

Added average distance per tank :)

Piwoslaw 07-28-2009 02:16 AM

Less decimal places!!!
But I like the average % over EPA, I think that's the best measure of hypermiling technique. We must remember that most cars in the EM garage are over EPA, and taking an average of all cars on the road would probably would give an average at or below EPA :(
The stats are a good idea, though :)

Matt Herring 07-28-2009 08:10 AM

Oooh...I like this!

What if some type of corolation was made with number of gallons saved to something a non ecomodder would relate to?

Maybe something like x number of free miles taking into account the average mpg is 33 mpg. Avg mpg times gallons saved equals ?

Or maybe a fancy counter that shows the number of gallons saved that ticks up slowly based on how many gallons per second or minute we are saving. Nikeplus.com does this for their members to show how many miles they have run and its cool to see it tick up little by little.

Great work bro...like it!

SVOboy 07-28-2009 09:39 AM

The ticking counter is something I'm not sure how to do effectively, but i'll look into it. I actually have a plan for some things people might look, but I need to learn how to use a whole new web tech to do it. Started last night, hopefully I can finish up today.

Nevyn 07-28-2009 09:59 AM

Might be nice to show just what the average EPA is?

SVOboy 07-28-2009 10:17 AM

Added average EPA

Make the ticking counter go at a rate that is a "low average" (not very descriptive, I know) for 24 hours, do a full analysis when the forum is least active, and reset to the actual gallon change at that time.

Where vehicles have put in the correct weight (not equal 0), I'd like to see an "MPG per pound", if that makes sense, and other stuff like that. I just want to see the data from different directions.

SVOboy 07-28-2009 11:00 AM

If you specify the "stuff like that" I promise I'll show you all I can. MPG / pound should be easy

orange4boy 07-28-2009 02:39 PM

This is fantastic! Go SVOboy!

I'm glad someone else thought of it too but I was thinking of the MPG per Lb because I would like to be able to compare my relative progress with the small car bunch to see how I'm stacking up. Mpg per lb seems like the only easy way to do this. Will this be available in the garage for individual cars?

How about dividing up the mpg figures into percentiles to give an idea of the range of mpg figures. The 24% average is cool but with the percentiles it would give an idea where any individual ecomodder is in relation to the crowd.

I think this is my competitive side coming out.

A chart would be very cool too but now I'm dreaming.

Ohh! how about a cloud of ecomodders on a graph with vehicle weight and mpg graphed. Yummy.

SVOboy 07-28-2009 03:16 PM

Actually, if you go to the top ten lists, you'll be able to find your ranking, I believe.

Currently I'm 9/1862 gas-burning vehicles

MPG/lb will be done soon. Also, the secret thing I am working on is graphs, so look out!

Piwoslaw 07-28-2009 03:43 PM

I've read that in some ecodriving contests the cars are classified not by FE alone, but by FE/weight. This allows the big boys to compete with the small fry.

Woo Hoo! Graphs. Visuals... let me show you them.

robbiewt 07-28-2009 04:48 PM

If you select the fuel log entries with the cost per gallon entered, you could put a dollar figure on the savings.

And, what is the "whole new web tech?"

SVOboy 07-28-2009 04:51 PM

As alluding to before, the new thing is fancy flash graphing, which isn't new but is new to me. I'm working through some educational materials until I'm confident enough to do create a web app for it.

groar 07-28-2009 05:55 PM

Great stats.

Following could be great also :
  • distribution of avg / %over EPA
  • avg / %over EPA per month & seasons
  • avg / %over EPA for last 3, 6 & 12 months

Denis.

SVOboy 07-28-2009 06:14 PM

I was hoping no one would think of the per month/season stat since I wanted to seem smart for doing it! O well, keep the good suggestions coming.

Working on graphing now, when I figure it I'll get back to the nitty gritty.

Matt Herring 07-28-2009 06:38 PM

All of this stuff is cool...great work!

For ecomodders I think the data you are working on is awesome...the more the merrier! It's really a chance to "show off" to the gas guzzling crowd and good info. for us to provide to the media to generate interest.

For non-ecomodders I think easy to understand graphics are the way to go (graphs, charts, flashy things). Kind of like ecomodder for dummies to make outsiders attracted to joining the cause.

Again...outstanding work...can't get enough of the site stats, Top 10's, etc!

SVOboy 07-28-2009 07:02 PM

Thanks for the support. Hopefully once we have all the stats we want to use ironed out we can integrate them well into the site :)

SVOboy 07-28-2009 11:28 PM

Something is up with the june/july stats, not sure what exactly, but I'll work on finding out.

Anyway, here's the first graph: http://ecomodder.com/flash/ofc.html

Matt Herring 07-28-2009 11:31 PM

That graph is working for me...what did you see with June and July?

SVOboy 07-28-2009 11:37 PM

Well, the points for 7 and 8 are the same, which is an issue

Matt Herring 07-28-2009 11:44 PM

Yeah...I got that too...possible both months are exactly the same mpg? Do you have data that suggests they are not the same mpg?

SVOboy 07-29-2009 12:03 AM

Fixed it...

Long story short. I was comparing strings and for some reason it was saying 00 equaled both 08 and 09 but that 08 and 09 didn't equal either 08 or 09, and showing for those months the results of the fills that had no associated date. Anyway, after much messing around I fixed it and the graph is now accurate. Not as dramatic as could be but it gets across the point all right.

Graphing is hard! But hopefully from here it'll get easier

Piwoslaw 07-29-2009 02:03 AM

The months in the graph are numbered 0-11, instead of 1-12. Of course, as a mathematician I've no problem with that, but Jan, Feb, Mar, would probably be best if it's possible to change that.

SVOboy 07-29-2009 11:37 AM

Yeah, I've been trying to figure it out. There's no good quality documentation for the flash graphing software I'm using so it's a bit like wandering around in the woods.

Piwoslaw 07-29-2009 03:07 PM

Watch out for wolves, Little Red SVOboy.

SVOboy 07-29-2009 03:36 PM

Got the graph on the main stats page, gonna go through the requests and code up what I can now, thanks for all the great ideas.

I'm 153/1865 (3 newbies!), which puts me within the "10th percentile". When I look at the midpoint MPG of 24.65 and divide that by mine, I am 77% over the midpoint.

I'm guessing my MPG/lb will knock me into the 30th percentile.

CarloSW2

SVOboy 07-29-2009 07:59 PM

I'll we working on these stats soon, as well as some more complicated stuff. Big plans, big plans!

I also hope to use this graphing software to replace what we currently use for the fuel logs in order to solve several problems such as what happens when you have like 4 million entries and to make it a little more interactive.

Matt Herring 07-30-2009 06:53 AM

I just changed my car type to gasoline from hybrid and I now show up on the Top 10 list...easy fix! Rank 17th (14th if you don't count cars that have not refilled in the last 90 days).

Great :) the "Top 10 by Percent Over EPA" is invaluable

Bug : the two "See more entries" links for the gasoline/diesel "Top 10 by Percent Over EPA" are giving the same table with only gasoline cars.

Request : could we have the date of last fill-up on the top pages ? or better a function to hide the cars who didn't filled-up since X months (X can be hard-coded as you wish) ?

Thanks for these updates.

Denis.

I'll work on fixing the underlying issue here.

RandomFact314 07-30-2009 01:38 PM

Hey that's pretty freaking cool, most of my stats are really close to the averages on there

RandomFact314 07-30-2009 01:42 PM

You should take out all the inactive members info for that chart, Like the people who last updated their stuff in 2007 or whatever.

captainslug 07-31-2009 01:54 AM

I would loved to be able to optionally input KWH instead of gallons of gas used so I don't have to do so many BTU conversions.
