So my summer interning place happens to have a EEE PC.... 'm using it righht now... does any0ne own one? The keyboard is going to take some getting used to but for such a low cost machine (this one is a 4g), it's really impressive....

I saw some at the Pomona Computer fair. IMO, the coolest part is the solid-state hard disk. No worries about disk crashes in the car. I have coveted one for my ElmScan OBDII, but could not justify it.

I was drooling too, but after fiddling around with my $15 eh4y laptop and kill-a-watt, it only uses about 8-10W more than the Eee PC, which I think could drop down to ~6-8W more with a CF card/adapter. Awesome from the "W4nt1! perspective, but not very eco-friendly compared to buying a used lappy.

waffle: by adding a CF card/adapter to an older laptop, are you saying you'd be retrofitting a solid state hd?

And trebuchet: where are you interning this year? Someplace interesting like Instructables?

My wife has one, it's an excellent internet appliance. It's probably not something you would replace a real desktop or laptop with, but if you just need something for some light duties it's great.

I'd love one, but feel like I need more storage than 8GB... For the price of the 4GB EEE, Everex Cloudbook provides a 30GB harddrive. I really think this is a way I'm going to go. Though, for the same $399 Everex offers a fullsize laptop too. Both with the odd Gos Linux variant (I'd dump that for Ubuntu...).

One of the recent visitors where I work was using a EEEpc the other day and he likes it, but wishes it had a few more features. Does everything he needs, which is much more than the PDA he used to carry could.

If I decided to, prolly. The biggest concern is dealing with reads/writes, since they will kill the CF card prematurely, so swap needs to be disabled, and certain changes, like software updates, may need to be stored in ram and written on shutdown, although I think those would be o.k as long as I didn't update too often. The best thing is that there should be a significant speed increase on boot/launching programs, which is great for a laptop. :thumbup:
