Electric add-on for bicycle
 

So my new job is in a place that is very hard to get to:

• Public transport requires train+bus+tram+900m walk. Over 1.5 hours.
• Bicycling is 26km and takes 90 minutes (compared to previous office 21km in 55-60min).
• Car - highway with lots of traffic. If I'm lucky, then 20-30 minutes, but during rush hour more like 40-60min.

Looks like I won't be able to do without the car during bad weather, but on the dry days I would like to bike as much as possible.

Family proposed I get an e-bike, but I do not want to resign from the joys of unassisted (when the battery is charged) and unhindered (when the battery is discharged) pedalling.
I REALLY do not want to be fighting any motors if something goes wrong.

So I thought about motors which are not permanently in the hub or in the support, but which push against the tire, like the example below:

If it breaks, or the battery dies, then I can lift it from the tire so it does not add drag.

Anyone have any experience with these? Any feedback?

Yep; the free-wheeling Freegen hub motor with regen is really going to be something when it comes out.

Anyone in a rush:
It would be pretty easy for someone with a lathe etc to mod a stock freewheel hub motor to do the same thing.

Apparently regen also saves a lot on brake maintenance and pads.

Grin is renowned for their Open Source 'right to repair' ethos, so fixing is way easier than the locked down encrypted expensive crap from most other suppliers.
